I had one.... absolutly loved it!!!
It was a bit of a sleeper at the lights and burned of many a boy racer with me "middle aged dad" laughing in to the rear view mirror as golf drivers and the like were wringing the life out of their ride! hahaha
Engine was bullet proof, it rusted a bit, but in general was really reliable. I used it as a builders work van having the boot full of tools and 5 up on the A3 to London most days. Definetly the fastest van in the West.
I remember cruising up behind a Vauxhall of some sort doing about 130 on the way home to Guildford and he's flat... a cheeky flash of the lights and he's looking in the mirror at at mumsy's Chelsea tractor, he pulls over all smug... the look on his face as all 5 of us are gawping at him as we cruise past and accelerate away was priceless... RIP the "Panza wagon"... she served us well.
Buy it...

Well we seem to have two entirely opposite opinions here - owners and ex-owners appear to be very fond of the ML55, despite it’s prodigious appetite for fuel, whilst everyone else who has minimal if any experience of the car take a contrary view. How typically Pistonheads.

Surely this is Mercedes at its worst? An American made 4x4 built cheaply, intending to replace the ancient G-Wagen whilst failing on that part. I remember reading somewhere this was initially going to be a tie in with Mitsubishi.

I had a couple through trade in my time, a 270 CDI which needed a new ECU and several other expensive bits and the other had starting issues.

On the other hand the 55 engine was AMG at its best. A bit of a waste putting it in such a disappointing car.
