I currently don’t have a car and I’ve been borrowing and using my mates cars when my mums been unable to lend me hers and yesterday I borrowed my friends 2008 Range Rover Sport 2.7 diesel.

I always see Range Rovers around my area and I’ve always wondered why people buy them and run them despite the well documented reliability issues. Especially the 2002-2013 generation Range Rovers, they’re very loud and slow and look so dated. The girl I borrowed the Range Rover off accelerated hard once and I just looked at it and thought it’s such an overkill, what’s the point in such a large, heavy, slow, unnecessary car that gives zero thrills! Boy was I wrong

Anyways, I asked to borrow it for the day yesterday and she said yes, from the moment I got in it, it all made sense, while it doesn’t feel spacious inside despite the size of the thing, I liked it as it didn’t feel hollow, it felt solid, in fact, it feels like driving a tank!

I’ve never driven a car where I’ve loved the fact it felt so heavy, it just feels like you’re very safe and stable, there’s also nowhere near as much body roll as I thought.

It’s a slow car, very slow....diabolically slow however between 0-40, while it isn’t fast, it doesn’t feel slow and feels very powerful, a bit like a lorry, you can feel the engine working over time to shift the weight and it makes me feel like I’m driving a drain or a yacht. It’s very comfortably and quiet, barely any wind noise either.

Average fuel consumption is 22mpg.

Over all, I really like this car, you could say I have fallen for it, i think it would be even better with the TDV8. I cannot imagine how nice the new ones are to drive, the 340 bhp V8 diesel, wow!

I hate people who drive Range Rovers: the arrogance, the excess of it all.

But every time I drive one I love it smile

Even the original RRS like the OP's has now gone through the deeply unfashionable stage and now looks tremendous value as a workhorse. £12-13k would buy the newest versions, 2.7s for less than half that. What kind of Defender would you get for that money?

I hope you have some kind of insurance cover for all the cars your borrowing. the lenders wont be happy if the BIB impound the car your driving!

Next time, borrow a Supercharged version, all of which have in excess of 500BHP, then you won't be needing the words above biggrin

Mainly ( but not exclusively) for male bullies & timid women.
The former fail to intimidate or impress me however much they try, the latter have absolutely no idea how to overtake let alone park.

I love mine. It looks the same as the one you're driving but has the 4.2 supercharged engine which makes it pretty quick. Has actually been very reliable as well, which I definitely wasn't expecting. I feel like an unmodified one in the right colour doesn't look so bad nowadays, but I guess I'm biased!

The "Sport" badge is the funniest part of that photo by a country mile!

Makes about as much sense as sticking a "SUV" badge on the back of an MX5...

Trouble is that the high centre of gravity means that you’ll die on your first trip to the shops.

PH because stereotypes matter.
As usual complete nonsense from you.

Leaf springs, beam axles, farmers.

My mate in the pub said he only managed 34 minutes of driving his despite owning it for five years. The rest of the time it was back at the dealership.
True story.

I traded my S320 for it, so it only owed me £1300. did a bit over 1k in it before I realised it didn't have enough performance to justify 7mpg. I loved driving it though, easy to drive, easy to park, very smooth and managed £2k for it when I sold it. I'd only own a T/SDV8 again though. Isn't the Sport just a Disco 3?

Not true. I'm a male bully and my wife is a very timid woman. We specifically chose a Range Rover (like so many others) because my wife can't park, overtake or do much besides the washing up, and because I enjoy impressing and intimidating people. I'm thoroughly disheartened to read it's not working.

Definitely. About as redundant as saying "hope you have insurance on your car" to any person on here that mentions their car.

I quite like the idea of them (not driven one) for long distance motorway comfort (excluding the high fuel/running costs). Not sure I like the image of them though

Agree in some ways as its off topic, but ….

a lot of drivers 'think' they are covered to drive anything.

Not nearly so many actually are.

Its all great fun, until it goes wrong !
