Thanks for the replies. I was thinking there might be some brand of container that was well known to have a tight seal on its lid, but if the usual solution is simply to put a container in a bag then I can manage that.

I'd have thought the original container would be fine
1 L or 2 L containers seem OK, but then I bought a 5 L one and put it in the boot. It was all going fine until I opened it up and poured 1 L into the engine, leaving something like 3.5 kg of oil to slosh around in a no-longer-100%-watertight container...

Just keep the bottle at home and fill up when you get home. Not often you do 2000 miles in one trip surely.
I'd normally just top it up at appropriate intervals, but my car has no dipstick, just a stupid readout that can tell you (a) when it needs 1 L, and (b) nothing else useful. I don't much fancy guessing, and I've had to fill up mid-trip often enough that keeping some oil in the car seems sensible.

You want something like this

Bottle goes in bag, bag velcros to boot side carpet.
Same as supplied with Skoda. It had a small Castrol oil bottle from new, needed topping up before first service, then nothing between subsequent services.

Yep. these are very good, and you can just stick them anywhere in the boot that has carpeting, so they don't even get in the way of any luggage.

Probably inversely proportional to the length of time it ends up parked on a shiny new pale coloured block-paved driveway...

OP - I'd just get myself along to Halfords, or a proper motor factors, and buy a 'Top-Up Pack' from the likes of Castrol...
https://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-flui...
...along with a full size pack with the flexi-neck. Use the 1 litre bottle to top up, then refill it when you get home. Repeat as necessary. I use my top-up size oil bottle these days for taking used paint brush cleaner, etc, to the local recycling centre to pour away responsibly. Mine came free with a purchase of a larger container of engine oil, and was supplied in a sturdy clear plastic bag with handles, and also contained a pair of disposable gloves and a cloth to wipe the dipstick.

Do you never live at home? Why not just throw in half a liter every week when you check your tyre pressures?

Plus the fact that they prefer the effect and great smell of Aldi for that seagull look they always promised themselves!

Your garage lists your current car as a 330i, so am going to assume E46, given the M54 is notorious for using oil.

My old 3.0i Z4 did the same, about 1L ever 1000 miles. After I performed the 'o2 pilot' mod it used next to non, and only costs a few £ in parts.

https://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=111...

Could also be a blocked CCV, worth getting to the source of the issue rather than endlessly spending loads on oil.
