So what ? On that basis of comparison nobody would ever appreciate an Elan , an E -Type or even a 250GTO . You don't compare cars of different eras by numbers alone - because then it all degenerates into Top Trumps by spreadsheet.
So what?

That happens all the time on here laugh

I will declare my hand now, and say i am an S4 owner.

I love the interior in that car, not so sure that green works on the 928 but plenty in the forums seem to like it.

Comparing one to a Cosworth is not really a direct comparison - the Ford was and still is a storming car, but it's a very different proposition. Having driven both, the 928 just envelopes itself around you. it's now flickable sports car, but it is remarkably sure footed. the Cosworth was great fun, but you're still driving a mainstream car, albeit an utterly fabulous one.

As I have said in other threads - the 928 is or has gone the same way as the DB&, and arguably the Bentley GT - cheap to buy, expensive to maintain and the market churned with the unloved stuff until the really nice examples were the ones left. The days of the £12k DB7 are gone. I would argue the Maserati 4200 will probably head the same way, as all the Mick's Motors offerings evaporate and the rarity factor increase 5 fold.

Are they expensive, I'll tell you later - mine has a weird cooling problem and has been a wee while, but otherwise, they march on and on. Drive them, keep on top of the electrical glitches and get onto the forums, and you will be fine.

Fit an X pipe and sound like the book of Revelations.....

I always really liked the 928, I used to think that the design was ahead of it's time, it seems to have aged very well. Though the wacky Pasha upholstery was never my cup of tea, it's a bit of period fun at least. I used to really like the idea of buying one (particularly a manual example) when they were cheap, I remember quite a few being in and around the £3-5k zone back in the day.

Now that examples like this are £30k+ though, you'd really have to be particulary keen and nostalgic to pay that out for one given the alternatives. It's the same with a lot of classic performance cars these days, the prices are such that it only seems to make much sence, to me at least, as an investment asset to be wrapped up in cotton wool, not as a performance driving machine to blast around in. It depends how deep ones pockets are though obviously...

You neglect to mention how potent those old v8s were.
In their day ....but nowadays people will compare it to SOTW Corsa acceleration or GT86-matching go
I know it's 90% theate of the shock and awe delivery, the nose pitching up to an angle no modern sports car would and a sound few cars today can match but I can assure you if you stepped out of a GT86 into a well running 928, even with the slush-a-matic. You would be blown away by the way the old girl picks up her skirts and goes.

I laughed with comedy and Porsche fanboy pride when I first went out on a 928. It's no disappointment, even today.

You don't know why Porsche hasn't made a modern version of the 928....really?

One thing to note is that these are really easy to drive every day. Comfortable, spacious, docile in traffic, even the manual box and clutch are light and easy. Steering is heavier than we’re now used to, but not really any bother even at parking speeds.

And it’s fun, different, with lots of spares available through specialists or Porsche Germany.

If the Cossie comparison still stands then it should be the S4 you look at - both available in 1987 or thereabouts. Drive each before deciding...

As for colour, I think these suit proper colours, not just grey/silver black or white. Fave is Amazon Green on a GTS, with magenta leather - have seen one in the flesh and it really does work.

And yes, biased...

Wrong wheels, but just needs suspension refresh, AC, and new exhaust to be mechanically spot on. It’s not as quick as modern stuff but acquits itself well against most things.

A fabulous car.

My ex boss had a 928GT. An absolute beast with that sodding great big V8 burbling away up front.

Owning one is on my list if my numbers ever come up.

Who cares about the running costs when it looks as good as it does.

A huge NO THANKS.

For that price, with that interior, with that 3 speed autobox....... I cannot think of a car less desirable for £30k.

I had a GTS for 6 years in Germany. Was a fabulous car. Got hooked reading an Australian car mag article about the early "S" as a teenager. Took 20 years to make the dream a reality. Can still remember the number plate from the Sydney car in the article.

These just get better looking every year and have gone from looking over sized to quite small in today’s world of over blown high rise SUV POS chav chariots that everyone aspires to.

The 928 models drive really well my S4 was like a big 944 turbo, with nice flat cornering, superb steering and brakes and had great feedback when it started to slide.

I always wanted a manual version shame missed out on one before prices went so high:

I do like the 928 and the featured car appears to be in good nick with a very rare combination of colour, leather and upholstery.
£30K though! Or a few days ago in Birmingham you could have bagged an S4 for £6.6K with £23K left over as maintenance and petrol fund...

I like them in general & really like the paint/interior combo of the one in the article, but they're just too much money to buy & use as a nice daily driver.

This would be nice as a 300bhp manual
To my mind this one is too slow for the fuel bill
+1, much as I appreciate the colour scheme here, the subsequent boost to 300hp is more in line with what Porsche originally intended for the car (before the oil crisis hit), and would make the difference between 'quick for the seventies' and, well, just plain quick.

To me a proper GT needs be a V12. The fact is outside of the UK a V8 is often seen as fine for a family estate car, ute or grocery-getter but it's not exotic enough for a high-end GT.

A 928 is a work of art. A stroke of design genius and a high point in car design. So cool.
