not trying to be obtuse but i genuinely don't understand the point of rally racing. It's clear to see the immense skill involved but i just don't get the point? slipping and sliding all over the place and doesnt even look fun? From the driver's perspective it looks like a complete mess of an endeavour
Were you looking for Mumsnet, only to end up here by mistake?

Lots of great clips, particularly:

Mark Higgins, IoM
Rally clips - Frank Kelly, Sneiders etc
And of course Kenny Brack in the GT40

Tiff wrestling an XJR15 around silverstone (skip to 4.50 for him starting a proper lap) is also a good one: https://youtu.be/jwX0Ej1vIPA

This still impresses me, every time I see it. Ukyo Katayama, driving the Toyota GT One at Le Mans 1999. He comes over the rise in to Indianapolis at just over 200 mph ( 2:25 in the video) and gets a rear puncture.

https://youtu.be/R_lmacEmy78

How on earth he kept that out of the barriers, is beyond me. What’s even more impressive is, it somehow doesn’t actually look that dramatic.

Over a rise, car unsettled, pushing past 200mph and “bang” - eyes on stalks!

Yeah, anyone could do that laugh
I know ridiculous statement from someone who probably couldn't get the car out of the pit lane (like most of us)....PH you've got the love it.

Only a game but I think a 4:00 minute Nurburgring is insane when you see the speed corners come at him.

Worth a mention amongst all the great drivers.

This lap is much faster but without the wheel/pedals it would be much easier on a controller.

If they couldn't I'd be surprised. Watch the video again, he loses it and locks up all for wheels and by the grace of god ends up, with zero input from himself (other than the initial opposite lock a few seconds ago) pointing in the right direction at a snails pace and thus lets off the brakes and carries on.

As I said, massive MV fan but that had nothing to do with skill-he simply spun in a straight line and got lucky.
Just in case there's a mismatch in what links we're all clicking on... are you watching the video where someone is driving an F1 car in the pissing rain, skids perpendicular to the track, tries to steer in but realises that doesn't work, so (whilst skidding sideways at probably 100-150mph) then makes a conscious decision of "I will wind off the lock to the correct angle to await grip", awaits the moment that he has grip, steers back into the skid, applies power and then moves away? I.e. puts in active decision making and conscious effort to fix the situation where we humble PHers and Mumsnetters shriek like a little girl, hopefully get lucky and then post a thread about how we skidded but held it like a pro because we are driving gods and definitely weren't helped by the ESP that we may or may not always switch off because a diesel 3-series should be driven unleashed.

Or did you see a video where someone gives zero input.

Disclaimer: Never been a Max Verstappen fan... I couldn't tell you anything about what he's done apart from being an F1 driver who is apparently good at recovering from wet weather bks.

My ability in the 100m sprint should be considered alongside Usain Bolt because I can waggle the joystick on Daley Thompson's Decathlon better than my friends.

If you ever try race on a sim it’s much harder than “wiggling” a stick. The guy went from sim racing on YouTube to racing a real car and racing karts. Lando Norris and max verstappen have both raced online with this guy and also race online a lot. They have both taken part in a 24h race too.

Lando Norris even streams himself online live racing people when he’s not out being an actual f1 driver.

Some highlights of him and max.

https://youtu.be/e2js_R1dY2w

It may be just a game but they are incredibly realistic now.

Here is a list of a lot of the real racing drivers who race online.

List goes on and on if you want to sign up and look here.

It's as if the other cars had one foot on the brake. How did he do it? Better tyres? More power? TC? Or just bigger balls?
I was at it, and to this day it’s the most incredible thing I’ve seen with cars. I don’t believe it was tyres, and he certainly didn’t have the power or electronics to match the Williams. In fact I seem to recall that Benetton had the better Ford engines than McLaren that year. Senna did it by being an absolute master in the rain

The other thing I recall was just how infrequently he pitted compared to the likes of Prost, seemingly staying out longer on the wrong tyres, but still fully committed. The greatest driver I’ve ever seen
Senna's car was set up for the rain. Most of the others were on dry set up. I think that there is a link somewhere on the net or it is a video on youtube about it. Still impressive but not that impressive when you realise how much difference it makes to the car. I'll try to find it.

Edit: another myth: you often hear that Senna did not have the electronic on board the McLaren in 1993. Actually to compensate for the lack of power, Neil oatley and TAG developed the most sophisticated traction control, launch control and active suspension of the time. On top of that the McLaren had a shorter wheel base which was much better on twisty tracks and under the rain. wink

Yep the RUF CTR clip is mad, think it was fastest production car for a short period in its day. 8.05 minute unofficial lap in 1987, 469 Bhp twin turbo flat six topping out at 211mph wrapped in a lightweight shell. All on a public track day wearing loafers smile

For me this is still not a patch on Kenny, firstly, it's not raining, secondly, he isn't having to apply full lock on the straights (see point 1)

Yup I was at that revival standing at St Marys and watched this first hand a true masterclass in taming a GT40 that clearly wanted to kill him smile

There aren't many videos around of him and it probably doesn't look as spectacular as some with being in a front wheel drive car but Dave Metcalfe in his Nova had some of the best car control I've seen. Here's some footage from the Manx:
