Is it the S4 engine "fettled" (before Audi made it diesel of course!) or the RS4 engine de-tuned?

TX.

Edit - just spotted answers above redface

This looks better value, a delivery mileage, pre-regd. Cayenne ... same manufacturer, same engine, same price but more space.
I take it you've never driven these vehicles. Macan is a much better drive.
I have driven both and, yes, the Macan is slightly better to drive ... but then most driving in this type of car is done at 3/10ths so that benefit is outweighed by the Cayenne's extra space etc.

Can't believe I'm looking at this and thinking "Yeah, my next car will be a sporty SUV", Most likely not a new Macan S but definitely a pre reg 4 x 4 SUV. I'm still horrified at the realisation.

So tomorrow, I'm driving from Geneva to Val d'Isere, with heavy snows recently I'm dreading it but if I had a sporty 4x4, quick enough to make progress and surefooted enough to take the drive in the resort a non event and have space for ski's etc, what's not to like.

Think something like this (or its ilk) is making more sense as a main vehicle and keep the Toy as well, a toy.

I need a shower, I'm disgusted at myself
Ahem ... try winter tyres ...
This gets mentioned a lot, but if you needed a 4x4 to get to the alps, the alps would have gone out of business years ago. The locals all use front wheel drive hatchbacks and they get there fine because....... they clear and salt the roads. You don't need an SUV to go skiing in the alps. stop it.

Yeah this!

Reminds me of the time I rented a Peugeot 207 at Geneva airport (on winter tires) to go to Val Thorens.

Late at night, racing up the mountain to make last call... flew past a full fat Range HSE which couldn’t get out of its own way on the freshly fallen snow.

In this country we don’t appreciate like for instance the Germans do (where it’s mandatory in winter)

However....

At 44K is ticking all the right boxes! Lordy 0 - 60 in 4.8! Yeah, that's plenty quick enough... I can see the 440i getting replaced by that and then some...

When the time comes.

Yes, it’s actually defettled if that’s a word, it produces more torque in the RS4/5
Oh.

25 years ago, people with a fast Audi 80 were impressing mates with "it has parts on it fettled by Porsche". Now you have Porsche owners loudly not saying to anyone "It has a detuned engine out of an Audi A4".
The design of this new 2.9 V6 was a joint Audi/Porsche engineering design from the outset, and is exclusive to both badges, it not being used elsewhere within VAG.
So, its not just a re-fettled Audi engine, nor is the Audi version a re-fettled Porsche engine etc.
They are one and the same engine, with minor ancillary and tuning differences between the brands.

As a Geneva 'local', my children ski in the Alps or Jura every weekend throughout the season.

There's a real mix of cars in the car parks and plenty of them are SUVs.

SUVs (especially Cayennes) are ubiquitous across Geneva, and the surrounding ski resorts. Staff at the resorts, or hotels might not own SUVs: many of their visitors choose to have them.

We drive an AWD CX3 wearing winter boots. It's quite a small car, and we carry the skis on roof bars (happy to keep them outside the car).

We carry chains, although it's rare that the snow hasn't been well cleared from the mountain roads.

Yeah - it's getting rather fat, isn't it?

It's not a car I'm going to buy, but it's quite an amazing exercise of engineering to get something so heavy, and with the CoG so high up, to handle so well on the road and track.

You don't *need* a 4x4 to go skiing in the alps, but it certainly helps. I've driven there in FWD, RWD, AWD, 4x4's etc. and by far the simplest way is to have a 4x4 SUV on all-seasons - never had to get any chains out, also means you can park more freely, unlike in a lower car where you tend to get beached in lots of places (the roads may be cleared, but certainly not all parking areas/verges are!).

It also means you don't need to faff about getting chains on when it's -5 and a blizzard outside to get your RWD car up that one 20 metre long gradient that it just refuses to ascend.

The locals have renault clios on winters and have a set of chains, but they tend to drive about 1-3km from house to village shop to ski slopes. If it's terrible weather, they won't all of a sudden decide to drive 200km to another resort, which I guess the above poster might be obliged to do if booking a skiing holiday from the UK months in advance!

Drove one on a Porsche Silverstone driving day and was impressed with how it handled ‘for an SUV’, how engaging it was ‘for an suv’ and how fast it was ‘for an suv’.

Then went and purchased an RS4, which was cheaper, quicker, had more boot space and wouldn’t get vandalised because ‘it’s a shouty suv’.

You instead bought one of the most stolen cars in the UK, one of the reasons being because it wouldn't get vandalised for being a shouty suv........ oh the irony laugh

Drove one of these today as a courtesy car, it felt slower than our Macan S, so a lot slower than a turbo.

PS published today and already out of date, this sits above the GTS that was launched this week, not the S

It has the same engine as the Macan Turbo 2.9 V6 440 PS ... hardly a snail then ...

Not cheap is it! I thought they were going to carry on producing this gen of Macan after they have introduced the 2021 EV Macan?

That's what Porsche said they were going to do, they just never said for how long they will make the two versions in tandem?
I wouldn't expect it to be more than 2/3 years max though?
