Ive just picked up a 718 GTS and its got interior rattles all over it! Very disappointed. Especially when as a lotus fanboy im always told that the porkers are better screwed together! Never had a rattle from my evora 400.
Apart from that though, good car!
Well there isn’t anything in an Evora to rattle is there? Apart from that though, good car!
I’m joking of course and envious if I’m honest!

Can someone tell me where these unloved cheap 718’s are?
The cheapest 718 Cayman on Autotrader is a base spec 2017 with nearly 50,000 miles and its still £30,000. Seems no bargain to me!
But for the same price there’s base 14/15 981 models with similar mileage so makes the 718 comparatively cheap. The cheapest 718 Cayman on Autotrader is a base spec 2017 with nearly 50,000 miles and its still £30,000. Seems no bargain to me!
High spec 987.2 S’s with 20-40k miles are also around/not far off £30k too and they’re 10yrs old now.

They aren't very good looking cars to my eyes and it is an odd shape for me. I would really like a go in either of them though to see if they live up to the hype.
Looks on them are very spec sensitive, i went all black, the sports bodykit (i forget its Porsche name) makes a big difference.Things they dont shout about such as standard dry sumping and the fact the pdk is now at a level where its unbelievably good is overshadowed by the lack of 6 cylinder sound. I've come to the 718 from an i8 so it's not as bad for me, in comparison to the evora/exige v6's and the older 981 etc etc i can see the issue.

Funny thing how looks are so subjective, to my eyes they’re great looking things, particularly the more classic looking first gen models. T1547 said:

Funny thing how looks are so subjective, to my eyes they’re great looking things, particularly the more classic looking first gen models. A key part of owning and enjoying an ICE sports car is aural excitement, the fact is Porsche's 4 cylinder engine defines the 718 model range and not in a good way. It grates at idle and drones on throughout the rev range never encouraging you to rev it out for the sheer hell of it. Comparisons to a Beetle or Subaru say it all, who wants their new, very expensive sports car to sound like one of those...? Even the 4 cylinder F-Type sounds better and spins smoother.
The 718 has star quality in its chassis and interior but it is saddled with a terrible engine. Coupled with its new price and you would have to think it was a joke were it not for the fact that it is no laughing matter. The 981 model was a real high point for the Boxster/Cayman range.

I know it's a bit off topic but....a £57,000 car which doesn't have climate control? Really!?
And no cruise control as standard! No standard cruise even on a base 65k gts! In the car above, it's taken another 13% of the base car value to get it to a point where it's still slightly under-specified for a £57k car!!!! (With 3.2% of the base car cost added in order to choose 'blue', you really have to ask yourself how much you want that blue as opposed to another colour from the palette....)

I think the 718 looks way better than the previous versions with their ugly rear lights. Yours in black looks very purposfull. I had a 718 as a loan car whilst my 991.2 Turbo S was in for service and I thought they were great cars to drive.Things they dont shout about such as standard dry sumping and the fact the pdk is now at a level where its unbelievably good is overshadowed by the lack of 6 cylinder sound. As the 6-cylinder was forced into retirement for emissions I'd be very interested to know the real world mpg difference on a 30min commute. My gen 1 Cayman S was very disappointing in this respect (high 20's at best), which was worse than my 996 turbo and far less potent but I had Hope's the DFI would average into the 30's without having to drive like miss daisy.

I own a 987.2 base manual, I get around 20-25mpg with my driving style, I had a 718 cayman pdk and got 14mpg over the weekend I had it. In the real world it seems much worse depending on driving style, I’m sure if you just potter about you could stretch it but what fun is that. Also a note, the 718 is a great car for a daily driver but if you’re lucky enough to have a practical daily driver like myself and want a cayman for the fun factor then you must get the 987.2, sure you could check out the 981 as it has the updated looks and still is a flat 6, however it lacks the hydraulic steering which the 987 has which really gives you that connected to the road feel the latter cars lack. The 987 is probably slower in most scenarios I’ll admit, but who cares really unless you’re on the track, I want to have fun. Also article is unfair in handling. New tyres vs old tyres is the test they’ve done on handling, not new car vs old car..
Those 718s sure do look good though and the interior is miles better!
As the owner of a 987.1 CS, it is interesting to see the evolution of the Cayman but this test was perhaps just a bit self-indulgent for the journo? For a start the car in the article is a 987.2 but unforgivably the tyres were shot! A missed opportunity for me but I appreciate the content anyway.
Obviously all these things are subjective but for me the 987 is the purer design and I cannot stand the current cars 'P O R S C H E' on the back along with all the badging. Probably adds about 10kg to the kerb weight.
It's true that the build quality has improved for Porsche but there are definitely a lot of 'Friday afternoon' cars out there. A ride in a friends' Cayenne was a real eye opener! So many squeaks and rattles and my local indy wouldn't touch a Macan with a barge pole as an ownership prospect.
But, different strokes for different folks I suppose.

A 987 with £5k ish of kit thrown at it would destroy the new car to drive.
Think you’ve been overdoing the Christmas Baileys there Sideways... but it is very clear from your posts that you don’t have much automotive knowledge. Personally I’d love either of these, and a remap in the case of the turbo, however just because I can’t afford the new one I don’t feel obligated to criticise (unlike some jealous owners of older models..) ...
So much snobbery in the UK. V entertaining tho...
