So £60k in new money..... so with a bit of haggling you might pay under twice the original price for a pre-production museum piece.
Hmm. So if you'd bought new if you factor in insurance, tax, servicing and MoTs, consumables and possibly some light restoration you'd probably just about break even selling today. Three and a bit decades of free motoring isn't bad at all.

They were £19,950 new in August 1987 and £30k plus the next day! one of the first of the flipper cars.
I remember reading the prices of both new and old stuff in the back of the Sunday Times in the late 80s and having my mind boggled. When you throw in inflation certain 'blue chip' cars are still way, way down.
https://redblossoms.nl/history/ this is mentioning new F40s being listed for just under 2 million Euros after inflation. After over 30 years you're still not too far off 50% down had you hung on.

Really? They make out likes it’s their own project car! I’ve been lusting after it for ages.
It was in fast ford some years before Luke and Jordan bought it, fabulous car Mr Tidy said:
Thanks, that red Fiesta Turbo is usually parked in the street in Sutton - brave owner for sure!
I'm loving the Z4MC - just thinking I should have done it sooner.
So if there is something you really want just go and get it!
Great choice. I had a Z4MR last year which I absolutely loved. It was an immaculate example in Interlagos blue. Unfortunately was written off in a pile-up on the M40 last May after a few months of ownership. I still lose sleep over knowing that car no longer exists I'm loving the Z4MC - just thinking I should have done it sooner.

RS500s along with E30M3 SE's will always get my attention. I guess its the BTCC angle.
One of the curious things about Group A stuff at present is that many of the road cars often fetch more than the competition cars with history. The RS500 is not only a genuine Gp.A homologation special, but the Evolution variant of a homologation special, as such they get a lot of attention (In my wholly biased opinion ). That said, in standard trim, the road car's dynamics are quite possibly the worst of all the Fords to wear a Cosworth badge...!

I can vouch for the fact that this is not the case with Gp.A RS500s. Cant speak for the others.

An Andy Rouse RS500 fetched £170,000 at Silverstone this summer. That's as good as it gets RS500 history wise. And not a million miles from the toppiest road cars. Not sure if it sold but at the same one there was a Gp N works rally car ex Gwyndaf Evans and Bertie Fisher that did the RAC with an estimate of 27-30 grand. That's middling 3 door road car money and those Gp N cars were Cosworth launch cars subsequently converted.
If that were an Escort, even a Group 1 or 2 one, with BRC history it would have a hefty premium over any road example.

The car you mention is the sister car to Andy Rouse's Kaliber for '88. It was built by ARE but it was Guy Edwards' car for the year, not Andy's. Not sure it won anything but fundamentally a decent car. It was subsequently modified quite extensively. The current owner has made a really good stab at it and the car is much more Gp.A original and much better than it was when sold.Edited by bloomen on Tuesday 7th January 18:49
Compare this though to a winning car, a works car, or those with great originality and provenance and the value is very different. It all comes down to 4 main attributes :
- Who built it...?
- Who drove it...?
- In what livery...?
- What did it win...?
£100k gets you a ropey Gp.A 500 built by a third tier outfit, raced by someone you never heard of in a crap championship and won nothing. If you want an original, unmolested car built by a top tier outfit (Rouse, EgMo etc) that raced in a memorable livery (Texaco, Kaliber, Labbatts, Mobil, Shell, Peter Jackson etc) driven by a top tier driver (Ludwig, Rouse, Soper, Johnson, Brock, Bowe etc) that actually won races or a championship then £250k gets your foot in the door with the most iconic cars a solid £450k+ any day of the week.

Even EVO magazine had a bit of time for one.......

That's been for sale for a while, I saw it at Essen Techno Classica last year (April). As a side note I had the same 17" TSW wheels on my white 3-door. It always looked good.
If I may, I’d like to add a view from an owner - and of, in fact, one of the very rare ‘HVW’ pre-production Sierra RS Cosworths- that were produced in ‘85.
All the usual chat aside, this car is unarguably brilliant to drive - I’ve owned all sorts of great cars, Caterhams, 996 GT3, M3 etc and still the Cosworth stands out as the most engaging. They feel very fast , very alive and have that rare blend of superb handling without too much grip and the right power to weight to really enjoy it. There is a reason why they gained legendary status - and 10 minutes into driving a properly sorted one, you will understands why. Incredible in 2020 - mind blowing in ‘85 / ‘86.
