Yaris seems to be one of them crazy 'one off' projects that manufacturers do once in a blue moon, loving the concept.

Ouch. But probably true.
Was thinking of the new TVR while reading but hey, no mention of it.... is it really coming 2021?

I’ve got a Gp3 on order but also been contacted by ford last year saying I have been successful to order a ford Gt only a handful coming to uk so need to get some people with big pockets together to go for that.

yawn, not much innovation in that lot.
TBH unless we can afford to buy stuff costing a fortune, all that exotica above is irrelevant.
On the wider point here, i never have got why people get so excited about an upcoming car costing X amount of £££ zillions that the likes of me and 99% of other people are probably never going to see on the road, let alone drive or (hell freezes over) OWN!
I would rather stick to what i have a chance of owning.
''Latest McLaren has 40 bhp more than last year's and through the use of titanium and carbon weighs 40 kgs less''. Well my life will be so much better for that!
A lot of the things you're describing start out at the big end of town, but trickle down to mainstream models over time.
I don 't see the M2 CS or the Ferraris, MbLaren, GT3 any time soon, or in fact ever, in my price range.
Maybe I could ask you a few different questions then.

Do you currently enjoy a car with ABS? How about something with a Sat Nav, or maybe even something as fancy as electric windows? Would it surprise you to learn that these items were once on top end models, but then found their way to more mainstream models?

Something that will be installed on top end cars today will eventually find its way to normal cars tomorrow.

If your complaint is you wont ever afford a Ferrari, then I get it. But if your complaint is you'll never afford certain features, then I don't understand that.

But this article is what the PH guys can't wait to drive. And they obviously aren't excited about what may tickle your cherry.

It's a bit like sex. Some people find shagging the average girl missionary style to be the height of filthy excitement. Whilst others may find an orgy with 15 models a bit dull.. smile
Kindly put my name down for the Yaris and the orgy. Thanks.

The GR Yaris for me.

It's something I haven't seen before, a small, light, driver focused 4wd car, much more than a hot hatch.
I knew a guy who had a Mazda 323 GTR(?) in 1989 I think it was - 4x4, 1.6 turbocharged 16v. 30 years ago! And it was mental too - mind you it was a rally car with hand-cut slicks...
Nissan Sunny GTI-R too. Could have been more specific. This Yaris is even more bespoke and certainly since the Impreza STI mk1 (proper light) and old shape Evo (advanced 4wd) went out of sale, nothing remotely similar has been sold...

My theory is to make a bespoke rally-car-for-the-road is probably much cheaper to develop than a bespoke 350hp (ish) coupe.

It must also be much more easy to develop a 250hp small car that is is complaint with modern legislation than a larger higher power model. Team up with the expensive project, go solo on the cheaper one.
Yeah fair enough... Let's hope the production version gets a bit better than the topgear review though https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/yaris/first-dr...
There are more reviews.

This one is, imho, confused about the suspension - a good rally suspension is compliant, expecting it to be hard is what is wrong with many a (lowered) hot hatch - drivers think they are super sporty (and better than stock), while in fact they are st for going fast on a bumpy b-road. It's number one reason for me to like love this car, similarly to why an A110 is great - suspension travel is not an enemy....

As for the grown up bit - hope they keep that (legislation if anything makes it compulsary now). For me, I'm not 20 and single anymore and don't feel any need for 'aural exitement', annoying pops and bangs and a loud cabin for the sake of it. If you like that, there will surely be aftermarket solutions - toyota keeps that in mind from the start just as with the gt86 and the Supra. The interior engine note seems just right to me, offbeat 3 sounds great if not loud.

As for it being not so playful, other reviews disagree. Also 4wd is always going to feel stable unless you provoke it properly.... The optional limited slip differentials fore and aft will make it a bit larier once you push hard enough...

Pre-dating the Mazda and Nissan by 5 or 6 years there was also the Citroen Visa Mille Pistes - small hot hatch and 4wd

Made for competition too thumbup

Cool, didn't realise they made this. Neighbour had a Visa which he drove like an utter nutter, almost literally on its doorhandles, it just took it. This special 112hp, 850kg and 4x4 is quite unique.

Reminds me a bit of the original Subaru Justy, fun little 4x4 three pot car that too even if officially a 'normal' car...

Actually see this Yaris in similar ethos, if not obviously a lot more serious piece of kit

Wow yeah. I too often wake in the night thinking when oh when will yet more ‘luxury saloons’ get here...

Each is more thrilling than the last.

A lot to agree with here! What's good for ride on a B-road is invariably good for the handling.

The pops and bangs from young Barry's Corsa are quite amusing, but with a middle-aged Barry in a Lamborghini Urine or somesuch it's just embarrasingly sad.

Heard many good things. But it's not 4wd which was a bit the point (very few light and good 4wd rally specials available)...
