When the 997 gt2 came out a lot of journalists couldn't believe how fast it was. Harris said quicker than a McLaren F1. Little bit more lag than the equivalent year turbo, so wasn't just a turn up the boost exercise. Went in a customers 997 gt2rs, the roads were too bumpy to assess but massive wheelspin in first and second. Probably the fastest road package would be a 997.2 turbo. 3.8 litre, 500 brake, but more importantly a proper dsg and 4wd. Sensibly sized turbos as well so no lag at all. These cars don't seem to be loved, probably because it's the non mezger engine.

The A45 is just as fast 0-60 as a 996 turbo. By 100 the 996 pulls a few tenths, by 125mph the 996 is gone.

The hyper hatches are quick under the ton. It’s nearly half the capacity of the 996 turbo. Longer gearing, better aero and ultimately more power means once up and rolling the 996 turbo even at 20 years old is much quicker!

I might have mentioned before, but I took my (mapped to 500hp) 996 turbo to the Nurburgring for track days twice.

The one thing that will always abide in my memories is the thrust it generated on the long Dottinger Hohe straight (past the Diner & pits). It always gave the illusion of accelerating faster the higher the road speed. Over 120mph it was visceral.

Sat on the balcony of the Devil's Diner watching, to see a 997.2 GT2 RS doing the same run and hearing the turbos shredding the air like jet engines was incredible, awe inspiring.

I'm looking at the top gear magazine recorded figures for a new A45 AMG - they are almost identical to a 996 turbo even up to 120mph.

I don't see any evidence whatsoever of the 996 turbo being much quicker when rolling. In fact in the real world with a double-clutch box the A45 is likely to be quicker.

The new A45 is quite a bit quicker than the old one, be interesting to see whether a 996 Turbo would pull away, standard vs standard, I reckon eventually it would edge it but dont think it would be that decisive.

Sorry I was specifically talking about the original one 2013 onwards.

0-200kph in 16 seconds is quite a deal slower than a manual 996 turbo which does it in 13.7.

Not sure what the brand new 45 does, it could well be as quick as a 996 turbo.

I guess I understand this chat comparing the A45 to the 996 turbo but I find it slightly insulting to the work Porsche have done.

If they brought out a car that handled and stopped like an A45 AMG the world would be up in arms about the worst 911 ever.

Be it a track or a b-road you'd be out of sight after 15 seconds in a well driven turbo and more comfortable too. The ride and composure of a 996 turbo is a league above even competitor cars. The A45 is closer to an Audi S3.. these cars get ugly at 10/10ths where the 996 begins to show its edge.

The 996 turbo is a very accomplished grand tourer. However, on track, it works (obviously set-up and geometry help) extremely well. It suffers by comparison to it's GT cousins, which is unfair because they are rightly held as benchmarks for track cars and are exceptional.

Just because a GT3 or GT2 is more track focused, does not mean the turbo is useless on track.
