Some hilarious comments on here, I have to say laugh

Clearly none of the critics have actually driven one hard down a B road in race mode.

'Dull as Ditchwater' and The Poor Mans S3' I found particularly amusing.

I dumped my S3 for the Golf R

It is a better car.

Add to that, it seemed a lot were leased and it seemed a lot were stolen.

Then, there. Done.
And a lot weren't. hehe Not that leasing is anything to be sniffed at.
This is the poster child for leasing though.

That, and perhaps the M135i.

As one magazine once described the Audi

‘Big-arsed Golf in a posh frock’

But that couldn't matter less. Who cares how a car is funded? It all ends up the same in the end.

I would love an estate version but you don’t see many for sale.

Why do people assume that because someone has a different point of view they must be wrong and obviously can't have driven x/y/z?

My 16 year old E46 diesel coupe is more fun than loads of other stuff I've had over the last 33 years of driving. It doesn't means it's objectively better, just more bloody fun to me!

The Golf R is cracking car just lacks the X factor for a lot of people. Get over it.

I'm guessing you're a leaser?

I didn't say I cared, did I?

It seems you do. Very much so.

For a while I had an R32 & an R. I loved my R32, but eventually realised I was never driving it as the R was so much better.

It was a wrench to sell it though.

Got one over here in the US. Wanted 4WD for the winters and decent power as well as decent practicality. It's very competent and does everything well, it is a little dull though.

But only 168 of them are Golf R estates...

Lets face it a lot of cars are good these days, and one person trying to say a particular r car is better for someone completely different seems a bit odd.
The person who gets a truly bad car these days, is the equivalent of the person who falls into a barrel of t*ts, and comes out, sucking their thumb!

I guess it depends on your definition of many but that still sounds like quite a few to me. I would call that many for sale. Not exactly a rare motor.

I am lucky to have three cars in my fleet

911 GT3

Macan GTS

Golf R with DSG

Which do I enjoy driving the most?

The Golf without a doubt.

Maybe, but to put it in context, there are as many Ferrari 488s for sale in the UK, more 997 Carrera S. Perhaps not rare, but I wouldn’t say it was popular either. Anyway, I would agree that they aren’t hard to find if you go looking for one.

I much prefer driving my GT3 than I do my Golf R and that's OK.

The take away from this (or pretty much any) PH thread is that different people like different things. They just do.
