Not so much "birthing" as excreting ...
To be fair, it's something that can never be unseen once you've seen it. I think a single colour rear end would have looked better.

The Z8 got a slating when new for it's dodgy handling, but last time I looked the values of those had gone through the roof.

It basically never depreciated at all. High owner loyalty, retro looks unlike anything at the time and am M5 engine. Lots of faults but a very comfortable sports car that looked great.

Never been particularly interested in them; they seem like a halfway house between ICE and EV.

Not particularly quick, and the fuel economy numbers? I'm not aware of a single instance of anyone achieving even remotely close to published figures in real life driving conditions. Those figures may be the "truth" in some lab environment totally divorced from reality, but other than that, my personal opinion is they are just all lies if they can't be reproduced on the open road.

Looks? Subjective. I hate them, and my attention is equivalent to seeing the remnants of a 5 car pile up. You look to see what the disaster looks like. Check. Move on, nothing to see here.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that what a hybrid is?

I always loved the look of the i8, especially the concept car with the glass doors. I found it awkward to get into, and the interior did not feel as exotic as the interior and seemed a bit cheap. I thought the very narrow wheels spoiled the look. Driving was fine, but compared to my Porsches did not feel anything like as communicative. ( For the record have owned many BMWs). The knowledge that the soundtrack was artificial bothered me. I like to listen to the engine of the car I am driving.

Still a beautiful looking car and vastly more exotic than any of the 911 variants.

Love the front-end and side profile but the rear is bloody awful. Agree though way ahead of it's time.

Looks great, still super fresh. However, IMO never had the halo effect for BMW that the R8 did for Audi. Shame really as BMW could have made this the successor for the M1. Chuck the (E60) M5s V10 in it and potentially could have been a different story.

“It just seems a shame that they were never really developed over their life cycle. BMW had the opportunity to steal a real match on their rivals, but the i range was kind of left to plod along.“

The i3 has constantly been developed with progressively larger batteries and the i3s has a wider track, better handling and improved performance. However, the i range was designed to get BMW noticed in the electric field and future cars will be much more conventional ( cheaper to make)

They look good imo but the market isn't a fan with nice ones (around 40k) starting from 42k when something like a 2015 V8 R8 is nearly 14k more it shows how much they're depreciating.

I think a large part of the value of the Z8 is the looks. They're timeless, and similar to the 507. Not to mention the examples I've seen have so few miles so the handling is pretty much irrelevant with that model.

I'm not saying the i8 is ugly, but it's hardly the same ballpark.

Some of the criticism was the claimed MPG vs real MPG. A huge gulf in figures. Not a big deal with sportscars, but when this one so heavily invested in that ethos, it kind of defeats the purpose.

I may be interested if values drop a bit more. Would make a quirky, yet sensible daily.

And a James Bond car.

Also, in the UK at least, certain well know dealers were stockpiling as many examples as they could get in an attempt to control the market.

Maybe in the US but in the UK Z8 got very cheap at one point, then rocketed back to mega-bucks, where they’ve been ever since.

Not everything that is groundbreaking will be a huge success. Saw one in the flesh and it looks really great. All sorts of interesting detail.
Comparing it to the 911 is comical because the 911 is so completely lacking in innovation.
Ah well, roll on the next gen of BMW’s future cars.

Yep - reminds me of the Audi A2. Not fully understood during its time on sale.

I'd say the opposite, that is a very flawed stop gap before equivalent full EVs (e.g. Taycan).

The fact it has a 3 cylinder engine with external speakers playing enhanced engine sounds is just an embarrassment.
+1

Kinda odd we-do-eco halo product rather than something taken seriously by car people, will be more likely to be found in 20 years forlornly gathering dust in the corner of a science museum like some kooky amstrad rather than some car nuts cherished ride, and lets face it greenpeace won't be preserving any.

This one brings neither performance, nor economy benefits, as my previous post stated.

Thank you, Captain Obvious.

I'd say it brings performance benefits when compared to other 3 cylinder engined cars without electric power boost, or gives economy benefits over other cars with a similar total power output smile
