Yes, the legislation is based on mid 90's tech which struggled with misplaced characters. Now that even car parks have ANPR it's just a nice little earner.

One Govt. Department (DVLA) sells you a plate that looks like a word or name.

Another Govt. Department (Police & Courts) fines you or confiscate your plate if you make it look like a word or name.
One govt dept sells you a plate you want.

Another dept only gets involved if you're a tt and change the spacing.

Not sure. I'll find out. It wasn't anything glamorous, only the reg from his father's X-Reg Honda. Done about 15/20yrs ago.
