I can see things going big time wrong if it slipped off the tyre but then normal winches have their own problems.

In response to haw many 4x4s need a winch. It was on my Landy (was set up for and did overlanding by previous owners) when I bought it. I personally have never used it to recover myself. It's been used for lots of other things though. Pulling trees down/out of places. Helping someone in the snow as I didn't have a tow strap with me at the time but the winch was. Gardening , getting close to the damn pyracantha wasn't nice so digging it out wasn't happening. Plus various others.

I don't think I would have bought it myself though.

Many years ago a lot of military vehicles had winch hubs, which were an extension of the centre hub in the middle of the wheel which a ope could be wrapped round to make a poor mans capstan winch. And worked in both directions

The S1V Austin Gipsy ( 1962 - 68 leaf spring models ) has these as factory figment. I’ve owned lots of Gipsys, but never used the capstain hubs.

A friends Austin Champ had capstan hubs. Turned out to be very useful when we got it stuck in a river.

How are you supposed to get the thing off the wheel once you've recovered yourself? Surely it runs the same risk as snow chains etc. in that it could easily end up wrapped around your ABS wire, hand brake cable etc.

Just found a much cheaper version on Amazon. It has a lower weight capacity, but probably OK for smaller 4x4s.

I've seen these around but never seen one in action. Like most kit, it's probably best if you have a couple of dry runs before using in anger.

As for vehicle mounted winches... I'm not a fan. Most are simply fashion accessories. If you're stuck, you generally need to come out the way you went in, which means you need to come out backwards. A winch on the front just drags you in further.

Personally, I prefer a Tirfor (hand winch). Sure, it's slow & hard work but it's far more versatile.

Good find, not as good quality but at that price worth a punt.

It came much quicker than I expected, looks OK, supposedly rated at 3.5 to 4t.

I've since found them on AliExpress even cheaper. For about £20 I don't think you can go wrong.

The adverts for these always make them look very attractive and easy to use. I suspect it's a last ditch sort of thing but if you're doing some serious off roading then there's a good chance you're with friends who can tow or winch you out. I can see the logic behind it though.

I think these features were for slings when hoisting them onto ships. Were they circular bowl shapes with perforations?
