£39k Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe | Spotted

Thuggish V8 pomp for Golf R money? Sold

It's practically impossible to not fall for AMG's C63 Coupe. Go on, try it. The V8 brute is too unique in today's world, too broad-shouldered and too luxurious to not have us all smitten at once. Naturally, that AMG biturbo V8 has always been a key part of the appeal, giving the rear-drive performance C-Class something its six-pot rivals, the Audi RS5 and BMW M4, can't respond to. But for many - us included - it's actually the AMG's surprising approachability that ensures its legendary status. As far as rewarding driver's cars you can use in comfort every day go, it remains a special offering.

Now, you might be wondering about the Lexus RC F Track Edition that we drove late last year. It did, as our review suggested, feel like it could run the AMG close for character. But the Japanese coupe's best asset - the naturally aspirated eight-cylinder in its snout - can't match the AMG 4.0-litre for outright punch due to its lack of blowers. Nor does the uprated chassis of the Lexus provide quite the broad spectrum of adjustability offered by the Mercedes' suspension. There's a unique appeal to the RC F and its comparably traditional underlying setup, there's no doubt about that. But technically speaking, the AMG stands above it.

The C63 Coupe is the pricier offering by about six grand, though, plus retaining an atmospheric engine presently gives the Lexus a USP that may win it as many buyers as it loses. Indeed, Lexus's current V8 is only set to get more special as it'll be succeeded by a twin-turbo unit in the next generation, a path Mercedes has been on with its eight-pot since the GT arrived in 2014. It'll soon depart it, with the arrival of a hybrid four-cylinder for 63 models from 2021 - meaning like the RC F, the C63 is looking increasingly important during these times of great change. We suspect there'll be far more tears shed when the AMG V8 dies than when Lexus adds turbos, though, for obvious reasons.

The good news right now is that the used car market Gods haven't cottoned on to the 4.0-litre V8's numbered days just yet, perhaps partly thanks to the wealth of 63 models out there ripe for used ownership. And although the cost of options means very few C63 Coupes leave the showroom priced below £70k (in fact many cost several thousand pounds above it), today's only four-year old Spotted is practically a half price example. With 12,000 miles having been accumulated since 2016, it still looks like a newish offering. And with so few design differences compared to the very latest C63 two-door, it amounts to a fresh-faced car with an asking price that dips just beneath the £40,000 mark.

Some of you may have noted that this figure is only five grand more than the Giulia QF we found in the classifieds a couple of weeks ago, a car that would have been cheaper to buy when new and - in the case of this particular one - is of nearly four-times the mileage. Aside from the fact it's not the hairy chested C63 S, the only real let-down for this C63 is arguably its colour and wheel combo. Silver paint and rather ordinary-looking five-spokes don't exactly scream 476hp twin-turbo performance car, but then again, that V8 does. Plain-looking as it may be on the C63 scale, this is one car that doesn't need help in confirming its intentions. For less than a specced-up A45, today's Spotted looks like a true bargain.

I love my 2016 C63 AMG estate, best car I have owned ( my 911 turbo is great too ) - has so much character and an event every time I get it to drive it. The sound is just amazing, in sport+ it bangs and crackles on the overrun. Even at low speed it has a deep growl.i have had more attention from Petrol heads in this, then in my 911 turbo in 8 years of ownership, people seem to really see the C63 as something special.

Currently on an epic road trip, running and driving break in Snowdonia

That's a lot of car for the money but if I could find an extra 6k I'd be stretching and getting myself an S Coupe 63 with that bombastic 5.5TT V8, they're different cars but I'd lose a bit of agility to have that engine & interior.

I love cars with nice engines under their bonnets for sure.

Agree, the bigger car makes a lot of sense. The interior on the c class is very disappointing.

I get to drive my FIL 500 which (now remapped) which is an (the interior is just class) event in itself & my dad has the CL63 with this engine in & it's a beast great fun smile

I often feel the 5.5 gets overlooked when it comes to good engines.

The perfect daily imo, I’m currently looking for a 205 estate after selling my 204 saloon last year due to gaining two dogs didn’t think I’d miss it that much but there’s just something about a v8! Lovely colour as well probably what il be going for, de-badged, perfect. I have family in the highlands can’t think of a better car to cruise the 300miles loaded up, then go for early morning blasts around their wonderful roads!

Rather like mine.

Two years of ownership so far from new.

Debating whether to replace with new facelift version when lease is up before the four-pot hybrid is introduced in 2021, or go for an M2 ...

The V8 is monstrous and I love the sound all day long, but there are minor things that I don't like about the C63.

Unpopular opinions to follow.

Glenn, I have a fully debaged S205 in a great spec and boring colour which will be leaving me in a few weeks after 2.5 years and over 30,000 miles. (And 22.8 average mpg!)

Though, apart from putting a smile on my face a fair few times, it isn't the perfect daily IMO. Too stiff, too much resonance from the estate body for tyre roar and exhaust, and terrible clutch manners. There also isn't that much space in them.

In all fairness, fully confidence inspiring in the wet, but realistically no faster than a 3l diesel cross country. I wouldn't ever have another one, nor recommend one.

And the V8, really isn't that amazing. It feels weirdly constrained in the c63, and mine emits a disconcerting supercharger style noise at the top of the rev range and enjoys coolant - which is all apparently fine...

Also, and I hate to say it as I almost always owned fast estates, but the concept has become fully council.

ETA. The burmester sound system is st.

Well that’s put a downer on it ha! I though my 204 was fairly decent a pottering around in comfort mode, was stiff but then all my cars have been stiff and had an STI before it so maybe I’m just to accepting!
I think they need a tweek/remap to get the most out of them as with the 204 really brings the v8 alive!
I don’t have any kids jus two smallish dogs and the mrs thought this would be perfect size really, neighbour has an c7 RS6 visit him every now and then and it looks massive!
What are you thinking of as a replacement?

Echo this. I had my Coupé for a year - listening to the V8 was great for the first few months - drove everywhere with the sports exhaust on. Then drove everywhere with it off to reduce attention. It rapidly became a one-trick pony because you can’t really use the oomph and it’s quite heavy for a B road blast. Add the 22-23 mpg average and I lost interest. Burmiester is sh*te!!

I’m still shocked you can get one for 39k.

Have to say that the blue wagon pictured earlier in the thread does kind of make sense though....

What a stunner in silver too, never seen one in silver before and it just suits it so much better than the usual blue white and black I see them in.

So reading between the lines with these...once you've got over how nice they sound the actual overall package of them is pretty poor from an owning perspective then.

It seems to be a car that is better to lust after...rather than take the plunge with. A never meet your hero type of car.

No disrespect, I like AMG's but would never double-take one over a 911 Turbo.

This is pretty good for blasting around the Highlands.

300hp more than the C63 and a lot less than £39K!

What's not to like?
