Big changes coming next year when manufacturers have to have an average CO2 figure for cars sold in the UK of 95gm, they are currently running at 127gm, but get away with it, because the rest of the EU is included when working out the average. Next year the UK will be on it's own when calculating the average.

However you look at it, it will either mean less models for sale or higher prices for the higher polluting models.

A) and that's a bad thing?
B) it's the "independent".

...perhaps I'm missing something obvious but can the UK not decide whatever limit it wishes to adopt?

A) Yes, if you're the average PH'er
B) Don't people say similar about every newspaper? Could you tell me the appropriate newspaper to read, please?

I originally saw the same report in the Guardian, can't find that one though.

In the Guardian article it specifically mentions that the UK has signed up to the 95gm average in the UK, per manufacturer.

And yes this is a bad thing, previously the average was across the EU, which meant that all the small (low CO2) cars sold in France/Italy/Other meant that the UK could continue to buy the larger SUV (higher CO2) cars that the UK prefers.

Next year this will have to change to bring the average down or manufacturers will incur heavy fines.

Here is another article on the same subject that might get a bit more respect:

I am looking forward to buying a brand new Vauxhall Viva. Or perhaps a British Leyland Princess. Maybe a Dolomite?

So the EU is mandating the emissions targets.
These aren't/won't be currently met in the UK but it's ok because the theory is the EU average will mean the manufacturers will meet them (Source/research for this? it sounds like BS to me)
But the UK is leaving the EU.
So the EU is going to fine EU companies for not meeting emissions targets while selling to the UK which won't be in the EU?

This all sounds like a load of nonsense.

Is that now established/set in stone?

I think it’s a little different.

UK will enforce the 95g/km rule because it’ll be part of a trade agreement. Just now it’ll have to average it out across cars sold only in the UK

It was one of the overarching Brexit pledges, that we would match the EU environmental requirements. Which of course we will no longer have any say when these are amended or set. As above, we will no longer be able to offset against lower levels from elsewhere.

I'm sure that everyone considered this when voting.

UK signed up to this a while ago. Also, Subaru have adjusted their list prices up to account for this tax. This was a thread before Christmas.

.. about as much as they considered Northern Ireland, and Scotland remaining in the U.K.

Whatever paper suits you, just, relevant to the article, the independent is hugely pro-remain (rabid anti Brexit) and I am not exaggerating in any way.

I think the i are just reporting the situation. Also one of the better newspapers around. Nevertheless, as our English teacher said about 50+ years ago ‘you should always read a newspaper you disagree with’. I cannot quite bring myself to do that with the DM, DE, & DT.

What happens if not enough people in the UK want to buy low CO2 cars? How will they get the average down?

I thought we are getting a new range of Brexit specials, things like Marina, Avenger, All-agro, Cortina, Hillman Hunter etc.

I looked on the Subaru site the other day because I wondered if they'd gone out of business.

Can't imagine many people have noticed this price rise, given the lack of new Subarus on the roads.
