I wouldn't trust a journo as far as I could throw one. The steering in these cars is beyond crap.

I agree, hard to swallow. One the features I miss in my 981 is lack of automating dipping side mirrors on reverse. Apparently it was a £3000k option that comes with memory seats and the original owner didn't pay for it. My 2010 BMW had this feature, come on.
Whereas on my Elise I have to wind down the window and move the mirrors by hand...
Although I can't say it's ever bothered me.

Can't you just crane your neck a bit? ;-)

Do you fancy me? Unlike you I have owned a Cayman and used it hard on road and track.

How's the Datsun?

Me: £85k 718 GTS probably as good as a £250k Ferrari F8. Fill your boots.

Others: Would sooner drive a Miata than get mugged off by Porsche GB for this car which has a drivetrain and steering rack on par with a Hilman Imp.

He mentioned that 2nd was good for over 80mph and that the engine had plenty of shove from 3000 rpm - which didn't really strike me as addressing the
issue. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UdFED2cgZs
I'm a serial moaner about ratios as well and that video demonstrates it to a tee - might as well have CVT for all the cog-stirring he does on a twisty road.
Lovely engine but it's going to be on tickover in the UK and that's a real shame. I do like that green.
Perhaps they'll bring out a lightweight 3 speed for the UK as the top 3 cogs are merely excess weight...

Yes of course normally you can rev out the top 3 gears in a car that does 182mph on UK roads .. rolleyes

I always find it strange that the manual ratios are such a bone of contention to some people. I've never had a problem with them, but to be fair I don't bounce the car off the limiter all the time... I can see it being a problem if you drive the car enthusiastically all the time though.
In normal driving conditions, even when 'making progress' the ratio's never annoyed me, maybe it's just how I drive. It's actually 6th gear which I found oddest, I'm sitting at around 3k revs at 70mph in a 987.2 s.

Would rather an Alpine over this VW. Some of the switchgear looks terrible.

Way over priced IMO. This is a £40k car max.

You’re obviously not a fan, which is fair enough - each to their own and all that.
If these cars are actually of little to no interest to you, why do you get involved in the conversations about them? Serious question.

Your comments are often, whether you realise it or not, the very definition of trolling.

Haha, you're joking but actually I tried both the 718 4-cylinder and the 30th Anniversary MX-5 RF and determined that the Mazda was by far the more fun car to drive - I even bought it! Sure it didn't have the interior quality of the porsche maybe but for half the price it was nearly 100% of the driving enjoyment for me. I love the 7800rpm redline and the sweet manual on that zingy NA 4-pot... it's impossible to take life too seriously when you're behind the wheel of a bright orange Miata. (Oh, with included heated seats, LED headlights, rain sensing wipers, reversing camera/sensors, etc...)

To be fair, he's not alone with the steering. The GT cars are much better - anyone who thinks they are getting a cut price GT4 / Spyder are a bit far of the mark. Just like a well specced 911 is still no GT3.

As for the MX5 / Miata, no doubt they are more fun and engaging and road speeds. But in comparison, slow and just not as usable. They are bordering on a 3rd car for me.

Practicality, sure they're not so practical - but they are actually surprisingly refined and comfortable. If speed is your concern, BBR can take the 6.5s 0-60 2L MX-5 down to about 5s with no forced induction. Personally I haven't done that yet - due to the small size the car already feels nippy and you can carry impressive speeds down B roads just because you're not worried about the width of the thing!

I had to put my brand snobbery aside when getting it, but ultimately have no regrets smile

Actually, I am a huge fan. The Cayman is a brilliant all rounder with great handling, fine damping and real useability.

Its steering is pretty poor though. It is something journos have said in the past...

I am not joking smile

Feel free to rent a F8 on Hertz and do your own back-to-back in 2-3 years time.

The head-to-head in the press will be a re-run of the 987 vs F458 in 2010. The Ferrari will nudge the Porsche as 10/10ths driving experience for A-to-A driving on EVO ECOTY but to own for 8 years, drive the wheels off on road and track, go on holiday and run 50k miles through it on a eurohoon, the Porsche will be its equal.
