It's a Volvo engine so it will sound like all new T2 and T3 Volvos.

I see them daily in London and I have never heard one with the engine running.
You won’t, they have an onboard electricity generator fuelled by petrol.

Not an internal combustion engine.
The generator is driven by an ICE so you should be able to hear it if it is running, especially as it's 3 cylinder. Whenever I've been in a Prius you know when it's engine is running.

How does that petrol-powered electric generator work then, if it's not an internal combustion engine? Is the petrol burned to heat up a big water tank and the electricity generated by a steam-turbine or what?
Try Google and read up on the differences between a hybrid drivetrain, an internal combustion engine and a ‘range extender’ electricity generator as found on numerous electric vehicles.

Then, compare the decibel noise levels of an internal combustion engine versus the noise levels of a range extender electricity generator.

I think you'll find range extender solutions in vehicles are ICE's. You could use a hydrogen fuel cell but I'm not aware of any applications.

Thanks for the opportunity to clarify before the semantic crew arrive.

Strictly speaking range extenders are ICEs, however they are not connected to the drivetrain and they are near silent in operation when the range extender is active both when the electric vehicle is in motion and at standstill.

I stood outside one today (with the range extender on) and was driven in one today (with the range extender on) and couldn’t hear it.

Therefore, the point about not being able to hear it stands but my loose language about what is or is not an ICE has been (gratefully) clarified. :0))
