I don't mind it, better than the dumpy frump that is the Beemer 1, not a fan of those alloys though.

OK, to answer the initial question, it's not Mk5 GTI good or Mk 3 GTI bad, it's sort of Mk 4 GTI OK ish.

Are people finding it boring because it is relatively unfussy in it design? I quite like it to be honest, the front looks buff without being over exaggerated. It is just bit hard to take it in when the one of the sets of wheels draws so much focus away from the rest of the design.
I actually think it's the opposite - the design IS fussy. The creases down the flanks make it looks 'blobby' to me, while the large grill in the bumper does look a bit odd. I don't mind the GTI add-ons overall, but I'm just not getting on with the MK8 styling in general currently. The MK7 (especially in CS/CSS form) was a great looking car; subtle and stylish, but still aggressive. There is just something awkward and a bit gawky about the MK8.

Maybe it will grow on me. A different colour and wheels would certainly help, that's for sure.

Jeees, I remember Golfs looking interesting. Dull as a Mondeo these days.
When did a Golf ever look interesting, aside from the odd one like the Rallye? All have been extremely conservative and subtle, even in sporting trim.

I usually like Golf GTIs but this one is... I mean... really ugly, sorry, interior included.

As someone who's wife has just got a used Tornado Red Mk7.5 GTi PP (to replace the leased Mk7 GTi and Mk7 R before that), I can honestly say that the 7.5 is the sweet-spot for styling (possibly excluding the Mk5, which is ageing very well...still see Becs' old one around in Warwick from time to time).

This Mk8 hasn't got any real tension to the shape and the front end desperately needs some surgery. Think I might persuade her to keep the 7.5 for a while...

Interior has some nice updates but I'm STILL not a fan of over-reliance on touch-screens...especially in performance cars - they don't work well with a firmer / jiggling ride and the need to keep your eyes on the road.

I don't like the way it looks, or the interior.

I was a big fan of the MK7, making it more round has just turned it into another generic blob.

it's as boring as the previous models in terms of looks imo

should be near £40k when nicely spec'd for the diesel

I agree, some of the worst wheel designs I have ever seen.

Horses for courses then presumably but I personally think that it looks less fussy than the MK7.5 at the front. The larger intake may look bolder but also looks simpler in it’s design to me than the previous generation, which to be clear I have nothing against either.

It'll probably look much better resolved in the flesh like most current cars.

The thing that concerns me more is the ergonomic idiocy involved in burying day to day functions within touch-screens/menus that result in eyes off the roads. Again far, far too many manufacturers are going down this road and it needs to stop.

Where’s the 2020 focus RS?

That link is to a photoshop of a 2017 era car with tyre writing, AM wheels, roof vent and lowered?

I remember the MK1 & 2, but I agree. Conservative and boring ever since. Capable yes, well built yes, but never inspiring.

Front looks exactly like the last Toyota Auris, But it will sell very well as with any golf that has been, they can be terrible looking or drive like rubbish and people will still buy them so what we think doesn't matter.

I think it will grow a little the more it is seen on the roads.

I think it's OK, and there's nothing here that's very surprising. I'd be very happy pottering around in the GTI, although the GTE is quite tempting.

I do think designs in this segment are quite poor at the moment on the whole though. The new Golf and Leon look like steps backwards on the last generation, and both the 1 Series and the A Class aren't great lookers either (even if the A Class is a step up on the previous version). Be interested to see whether the A3 sticks with the clean lines, otherwise the Renault Megane is probably the best looking hatchback on the market - to my eyes at least.

It's a real shame they got rid of the plug point behind the VW badge for the GTE.

Personally I find the looks sleep inducing but I do understand that this car needs to be an evolution and not a revolution of the old one.

It'll be a good car no doubt but it's a shame that new cars have to be designed to meet regulations now rather than allowed some design flair.

I hate seeing new cars being knocked especially when they've so much skill ,care and expertise put into them.

However what I will say is , that having seen the MK 8 in all it's forms - well most of them - that I am very pleased that I still have ( bought from new) my 2007 ,15,000 mile Edition 30.

Of course ,it goes without saying that the later cars are technically and in many other ways superior to the MK 5 GTI's and Edition 30's but maybe there's just a little something missing ?
