Some people take very mild critical opinions of cars they like as assaults on their mothers’ honour.
Chill out folks.
Exactly. The comments have really been reasonably mild....and yet it really irks some!Chill out folks.
Im sure it'll be a great car...but the styling....i'm really not sure.
Maybe it'll be a grower.
It's a smart enough looking car but the last couple of generations of Golf haven't exactly been exciting looking and this is no real different.
I suspect it'll be a very good car and as mentioned the wheels don't do it many favours but like many new hatches, give it a couple of years and it will blend in with all the others on the market.

I suspect, as with the 7/7.5, it'll be an absolutely excellent package to live with. Far better 90% of the time than any other hot hatch. But journos will say it's not very exciting, precisely because it's excellent at being a good car. It won't shake your fillings out or drive you mad with noise on your commute.
Then the dheads who haven't even seen one, let alone driven one will say it's boring, dull, white goods etc.

GTD looks the be the pick of the range for me. Healthy amount of power, good torque, nicest wheels and an impressive range.
Not sure I'm a fan of the Megane styled fog lights though. Shall reserve judgement until I see one in person!
They've copied the foglight design for sure, but the Megane looks fantastic compared to the Golf. I think the Golf always looked better as a 3 door as the lines are so flat and bland on the 5 doors, whereas the Megane has a more sculpted and aggressive shape as a 5 door and pulls it off (as someone mentioned before a little bit like an Integrale). Its also going to be over 50bhp down on the Megane. Not sure I'm a fan of the Megane styled fog lights though. Shall reserve judgement until I see one in person!
In the same way the i30N looks "white goods" boring whereas the new Focus ST at least makes some effort on the design of the side.
Is it me or are the wheels 3 R logos?
Also, what was the first asymmetric alloy wheel?
I was thinking RS turbo in 87 but just remembered the P Pirelli alloys on the mk1 golf GTI campaign? VW do have a history with them really, even the mk2 16v had those teardrop ones that were asymmetric

Did I say they should?
No, but I just find it strange how often this topic comes up on this forum. There are lots of very insecure people on this forum, who base their purchases on what other people might think.Alex_225 said:

Has any Golf been exciting looking? Not sure that's really what they aim for.I suspect it'll be a very good car and as mentioned the wheels don't do it many favours but like many new hatches, give it a couple of years and it will blend in with all the others on the market.

just like the dheads who haven't even seen one, let alone driven one will say it looks great, it's going to be fab, etc, etc. We're all basing our positive or negative opinions on what the pictures show, and the overwhelming majority think it looks dull. For me, it really does look dull in the photos, and IMO it has zero style or character, and unless they've fundamentally changed any driving characteristics, it will be just like the last couple - very, very capable, but soulless. It'll no doubt do it's job exactly as it should do, but it's probably never going to do anything other than merely satisfy you. Hence my 'white goods' comment.
Maybe I'm wrong, as of course I haven't driven one, but if I were a betting man....
Its a Golf GTI, its ploughing the same furrow but updated, its doing what its good at.
Quick-ish (Golf GTI's always seem quicker than you expect these days) with a nice interior, faithful handing and wrapped up in a practical, subtle package.
No surprises, wheels arent great I agree but think the looks will be a grower once you see a few out and about, probably less pleasing initially to the Mk7 though.
Bet it will be a superb car to own, like all the Golfs before, ok Mk3 2 litre wasnt stellar and the Mk4 a bit underwhelming, but all the rest have been really good and if we admit it, for most of us, all the car we ever need.
200 bhp diesel, I know they dont get a good press but driven a few of the previous ones and found them to be really good all rounders with fantastic economy.

Dull as ditchwater white goods. Interests me in the same way my toaster does.
Do you spend the same amount of time on forums commenting about your toaster as you do this then? Those wheels are going to take some time to get used to, they really are a juxtaposition to the rest of the design, the spindly ones do look better. The seats do look good though but then previous generations have always felt good to sit in for me.
