If i was building one of those chevys I would want it to be far less obvious what the donor was. Just make it a shortened 57 Chevy with the all Corvette's oily bits.

I know they were not particularly well built, but what makes you say they were dangerous? More dangerous than other cars from that era?

I had one, inherited from my grandfather who had bought it brand new. The first time the suspension collapsed, I had just put the car back onto the drive, the front ns ball joint gave way as I braked. The second time it collapsed (same corner, brand new ball joint) was on a 40mph dual carriageway just as it went to a single carriageway to pass under a railway viaduct. I ended up trying to avoid oncoming traffic on three wheels and a load of grinding metal. So yeah, I think they were more dangerous than other cars of the time, and I subsequently had a Lada.

I'm not sure what the owners/builders intentions were, he might think it looks perfect (or at least that's what he tells his guide dog), but the rake of the windscreen is screamingly plain wrong. I'm guessing it's slap on kit that avoids modifying the crash structure of the car but surely there's a better car to begin with?

Well that's definitely a large enough sample of results upon which to base a strong opinion about an entire production run of a vehicle ;-)

Underwhelmist - before posting unqualified and baseless claims on PH, please undertake a comprehensive survey of all current and previous Allegro owners, mechanics who’ve worked on them and garage owners who’ve sold them (new and used), as well as obtaining the views of all former BLMC employees involved in the design and build of the Allegro. I could assist in a small way as I experienced driving (and frequently repairing) a family friend’s one in the seventies. I look forward to hearing from you. biggrin

I am aware that a sample size of one does not make for a statistically rigorous assessment. I also understand that anecdotes do not equal data.

However the same component failed on mine on two occasions. And (anecdotally) I believe this was a common problem on Allegros. Allegra?

Back in the day, the classical direction on music scores of 'allegro' soon became reinterpreted by the Birmingham Synfonia as: 'Quickly, but not too quickly - in case the front wheel-bearing falls off".

And what is PH, if not an entertaining assembly of personal anecdote? I remember them too, back in the day, having occasionally travelled in one (car-share). Shaken, not stirred - though never driven. (Yes, that one was awful too).

There was even a works rally car in red & white livery - it was a sensation........
