Conversely, it will be interesting to get your views once you have bought a Tesla Model 3. When is it coming?
We want to move overseas first, and I think it will be the first car we buy when we get there. This blasted corona virus thing is causing all kinds of problems making planning a nightmare. The primer grey is not helping the BMW. After seeing one in the flesh it's a lot better looking. For some reason the silver highlights cant be black in the UK. And already there is significant discount.
There is so much choice in this segment you have to create something a bit different. I guess for the 95% of your driving the BMW is a ugly nose ahead.
The problem is the manufacturers themselves dont help. Ford st line makes it very had to spot the diffrence. As does the N line for the hyundi.

I've been wondering what to replace my car with, and it has me thinking that even brand new ICE's just aren't doing it today, so how will they be in a year or two from now? I suspect these type of cars will just make me hang on to my current car
A BMW dealer will happily sell you a M2, new or used. I just got one and it's brilliant. You've decided to buy a Tesla already. That's great and I'm sure everyone is happy for you. If you've already decided to buy a Tesla why even bothering commenting? Was it just rhetorical? Were you thinking out loud and typed instead?

It's not a bizarre new niche at all, is it? It's simply the return of the small saloon/sedan, with these specific models being the fast versions.
Back in the day every hatchback had a saloon/sedan equivalent - Golf/Vento/Bora, Escort/Orion, Astra/Belmont. They died out for whatever reason but now they're back for whatever reason.

I had the same thought yesterday; those were for granddads who found their old e-segment barges too big and hatchbacks far too racy.
It seems to have come full circle, only the granddads seem a lot younger. And the awkward old Ford Onion suddenly looks surprisingly less awkward.

They were also great when, as a teenager, you rang up for an insurance quote and the insurer went, "we don't even have a record of someone under the age of 50 driving one of these, let alone crashing it".It seems to have come full circle, only the granddads seem a lot younger. The downside is after ten years of neglectful beating and dropping out the bottom of the secondhand market they were unmitigated chod of the highest order, but then so were most of the base-model 1.1 hatchbacks my friends were paying significantly more to insure, and I had a 1.6 with electric windows and a sunroof.
Neither are particularly good looking, but the i30 is marginally less grim.
The 2 series GC is an awful looking car with some very peculiar proportions. The interior is loads better but the exterior is rancid. I could never buy a car that I hated the looks of.
Deals seem to be pretty strong on the 2 GC at the mo (or at least were) so that may help people get passed the looks!

And you get plenty of people who bh when a simple comment is posted like "it leaves me cold", with the usual refrain around "thanks for the comprehensive and well thought out contribution...".
Fine. In that case, if people don't like it, the alternative might go something like, "okay, well if you don't like this, then what would you get instead?"
It may be hard for you to follow the logic, and I feel genuinely sorry for you if that's the case.
I hate to burst your bubble, but forums are a place to discuss both positive and negative views. If all you're interested in is a "yes man" mentality, then go and find a mutual masturbation society nearby.

Has this replaced the Megane 280 already Nick? What made you switch?
Not much rationale behind the madness I bought the Megane with my head as it is probably the ideal trackable daily, what a brilliant package.
But my heart was always saying M2.
Fortunately, M2 prices have dropped significantly in the 6 months I had the Megane and I got a great discount on it then, which meant the loss wasn't that bad, particularly as I probably bought the BMW at a virus price. I am also on a long gardening leave so that gave me plenty of time for sourcing and DD.
Not regrets so far but not having tracked it yet because events have been cancelled, the jury is still out on whether it will work on circuit.

Not everyone is rapturously in love with these makes or models. Judging by some comments, some feel quite strongly that BMW have lost their way, and others that the other car never found it.
