RE: Automotive comebacks | Six of the best

I love how new versions are such an emotive subject with owners/enthusiasts of the old ones ?
Generally would take the new version of all of those if I had to actually drive them.
We had a couple of old Fiats 500's, not viable transport nowadays, interesting novelty.
Old Land Rovers, leave them to the Walts, farmers and urban chaps who like to tart them up.
New Supra, I like, it like the old one as well, you dont have to choose.
The new Mini is now nearly 20 years old, the old one is a memory beft left int he past unless you have a nice, modified one you use at weekends.
G wagen, like the old ones, most of the new ones tend to be a bit blingy, but am sure a non gangsta spec one is a fine thing.
Alpine, sure its great, not really a looker but remains faithful.

Ironically, for me, the greatest ever Automotive 'comeback' was from a brand that hadn't actually left the market, but rose lazarus like with a completely new model, leaving behind a previously suicidally bad product to replace it with one of the finest cars ever made in its segment!
One moment, they sold these, awful, terrible, truly hateful things:
And then, this appeared, and really rewote the rule book for what a truly modern family car should be:
It's really quite hard to emphasis enough just what a turn around this was at the time!

Good point on the Focus, really was a game changer, I took an Escort Mk6 I think in PX and it had what looked like a Kent engine, stood me at nothing and sold it for a decent price but what a turd of a car, people slag the Rover 200 off but I drove that Escort back to back as I was running a 200 as a daily at the time and the Rover was so much nicer.
A mate just px'd his very tidy mk1 Focus, still just an old banger but one day, it may be recognized as a classic, cant see why not, a lot of classics are crap but the Focus still stands up today and the Mk1 handled better than the ones that came after, or at least was more fun.

The same could be said of the Defender. It's not like it was out of production for years before someone said 'I know, let's build a new one'.
Apart from a run of 150 70th anniversary Defender Works V8's built by the Land Rover Classic department in 2018, the Defender was out of production for 4 years. Edited by BFleming on Wednesday 25th March 11:13
