My MOT was due on 24 May.
I don't know how true it is, but a motor trader mate of mine said one of his trader mates who also does MOTs had heard of a couple of cases where people using the extensions had accidents and their insurers were trying to wriggle out of paying.
If the car had a fault which contributed to the accident such as bald tyres or bad brakes, the insurer should rightly contest the claim. I suspect for big claims where the car has had the CV-19 MOT extension, insurers will be, rightly, investigating the roadworthiness of the car.I don't know how true it is, but a motor trader mate of mine said one of his trader mates who also does MOTs had heard of a couple of cases where people using the extensions had accidents and their insurers were trying to wriggle out of paying.
I don't see how any insurer can as a point of principle not entertain a claim on a car with a CV-19 extension as the car does have a valid MOT.

Anyway as my usual place was open I booked mine in on 19 May, partly for peace of mind but also to keep a continuous history and avoid huge queues when the extensions expire! Thankfully it passed with no advisories.
But the certificate issued showed an expiry date of 18 May 2021. Having had a similar problem before I e-mailed the DVLA and they sent me a revised certificate showing expiry on 24 May 2021. It seems the extension tells their system it was done before it was due in November, so it worked from the test date.
So if anyone does get one done just check the dates!
My wife's car was due about the 30th of this month and as our local garage has partially reopened we took it in for MoT a couple of days ago even though it had an extension.I don't know how true it is, but a motor trader mate of mine said one of his trader mates who also does MOTs had heard of a couple of cases where people using the extensions had accidents and their insurers were trying to wriggle out of paying.

As you say, the MoT has now 'lost' a week, being due 25th May next year.
That's a bit of an annoyance because the first three weeks of May is always a very busy time for us but the last week of May is usually quiet and has always been an ideal time to get it done.

Insurance companies build these risks into the price, out of every car on the road I bet a huge % are actually not roadworthy and the owners have no idea.
Top coil of spring snapped 3 weeks into new mot?
Cat not working?
Handbrake not working? (very common on certain cars)
DPF playing up?
Sill rusted through behind a plastic cover which still passes mot?
12 months is a completely made up time scale to get the worst of the worst off the road. You can put 50k miles on a car in a year fairly easily and many mot fail items can occur you wouldnt know about.

That’s the word, but my second car received a stty letter off the DVLA to get it MOTed.I had already done it that week and don’t know if it was an admin cock up or what.

Family owned car had an expiry of 3rd June 2020.
Last week it automatically extended to 3rd Dec 2020.
So that's the new expiry anniversary date.
When the car gets MOT'd before 3rd Dec 2020, it should extend to 3rd Dec 2021.
But only if you have it tested up to 30 days before that date, other wise it's the same as taking a non MOT extended car for test now that runs out in August, you would get a year less a day. Last week it automatically extended to 3rd Dec 2020.
So that's the new expiry anniversary date.
When the car gets MOT'd before 3rd Dec 2020, it should extend to 3rd Dec 2021.

I wonder when this 6 month extension will end. Must be soon?
Eh? It's simply, as I understand it, a 6 month extension for all cars after 1st April (or May, whatever). There is no "end to extension", it's just a reset (to 6 months added) is it not?So your new expiry date is as follows:
Old Expiry Month now = New Expire month, as follows:
April = Oct
May = Nov
Jun = Dec
Jul = Jan
etc.
