Nice idea....until the tech moves on again and all you'd achieved is having your trousers pulled down by Porsche, again.

I'd probably consider one of these for my 987 in a few years when the 987/997 version comes out.

The PCM became unusable a few years ago and upgrading to a Pioneer CarPlay unit has been a great choice. It looks 'ok' rather than great. I've kept the original unit as well

It's only worth the investment in one of the Porsche units if the car is a long term keeper on the slightly newer 'classics'. I can't imagine it adding much value to my car if I sell it as most buyers would probably prefer either the original PCM or not care too much that there was an aftermarket one in there.

Good move from Porsche, it's something other manufacturers should consider IMO.

Indeed - company called Kraemer Automotive that also provided the previous gen retrofit satnav to Porsche.

Strongly considering getting this for my 993. Air cooled music for B-roads, all of your favourite podcasts and navigation for those long motorway schlepps...

Sidenote - Porsche sells the map data extra, assume most buyers will just navigate via Google or Apple Maps via Car Play

Audi and VW have done it for a while - eg, a couple of years ago there was a Kenwood-sourced upgrade for non-DAB era Sciroccos. Could be supplied / fitted at a dealer or DIY bought from an indie ICE store.
And the RRP wasn’t marked up compared to regular Kenwoods, which is why, as usual, this Porsche option is an absurd con. Plenty of much cheaper alternatives available from Kenwood, Pioneer, et al - many of which will probably also have better sound quality - which can be customised so a Porsche logo appears during startup, etc.
And who the hell can actually hear a 996’s stereo at motorway speeds, anyway?? rolleyes

I'm guessing the average person will opt for the 'Porsche' set up. It's always possible to do better for less but it depends a. how much time you have spare and b. what the value of that is.

Not for everyone possibly but quite amusing to read if you want something like modern phone integration in a car you are not an enthusiast biggrin

Meh.

I'd much rather have something that converts a modern touchscreen into a cassette deck.

The cars are classic.
The background noise of the exhaust is all that is needed.
Try driving to Germany on just an exhaust note though hehe

"You know how it is with even the most modern of modern classic. No matter how joyous the response from a naturally aspirated engine or spellbinding the feedback from hydraulic steering, sometimes you'll be stuck on a long, tedious journey. There's only FM radio in the car, and it'll be boring. How are you going to get 6Music then?"

Oh no, you poor thing...

Exactly! banghead

I know the original PCM1 is archaic, but even the PCM2.1 is still junk and getting on for 16yrs old.

Surely it can't be that difficult to modify it to fit the 997 aesthetic and there's probably an even bigger market for that?!?

An awful lot of 987 owners seem to fit aftermarket touchscreen devices which have no buttons and precious little aesthetic other than a black screen. Throw in a surround that fits the dashboard (easy to find and not expensive) and you have something modern that fits in well.

Does anyone know if the single DIN unit is an update of the "Porsche Classic Radio Navigation System" that's been around since 2015? They look identical, but maybe the internals got a refresh?

Ok, seems to be much the same as the old unit but with DAB+ (Europe) and Apple CarPlay added...maybe also some other updates like faster CPU etc?

wish they did it for the 981 Cayman. I've got a fully upgraded PCM 3.1 but its rubbish.

I got the Continental CDD7418 CD/DAB/USB for my 968. Replaced a Becker Mexico 4325 cassette radio. Both look fairly stock, the Becker a little more so but the modern features of the Continental outweighed the aesthetics. No touch-screen or Apple CarPlay still, though Bluetooth from Spotify; hands-free calling and Voice driving directions from Waze are all good. I paid €199 for the unit, plus €11.99 delivery from the Bay.

The only negative I’ve got for it is the cheap feel of the plastics. Comes with connectors and a DAB antenna.

Let me be the first to say; 'how much'?!

Think I'd rather listen to the engine on an air cooled for circa £1500!

Plus Continental have been doing a DAB standard DIN for a few years which looks pretty OEM, at least on the latter 964/993's for circa £150.
Becker had an equivalent to this a few years ago; cost more than this too. I wouldn't put a £150 unit in any car; but each to his own.

Oh yes. Fantastic.

What has really annoyed me in the last 20 years is that car radios have largely never moved away from their “max power” looks.

An OEM looking unit, matching plastics and aesthetics with modern functions - marvellous. CarPlay is basically the defacto standard for the smartphone generation.

Given what other manufacturers charge to replace the OEM unit, this is a relative bargain IMHO. I think I'd do this if I had a 996. It's tasteful, and made by Porsche so plastic 'grain', colour and other things will likely be correct.

It still irks me that someone replaced an AC switch on my E90 and the plastic is veeeeeeeery slightly off a shade. This probably says more about me than anything though.

I'd get one.

How about offering a classic radio for owners of current Porsches who find their factory infotainment systems a bit pants?
