Great idea.

But is that price including fitting at opc? Does it work with the Bose cars? And in the 986 the heater controls will need to be re positioned, what about cars with manual controls? Is that all included in the price?

I think if all the above is 'yes' then I would be quite keen..

While I winced at the price (I can’t afford to run a Porsche either) the single DIN unit appears unique at the moment in not housing a big slide out screen that ends up obscuring other parts of the fascia, and possibly other controls.

I have tried several solutions in my cars. I had a double DIN Sony unit with Mirrorlink and a Nokia smartphone. Having ViewRanger displaying OS maps on a 6” screen was great. When it worked. Mirrorlink could be quite flaky and often failed, requiring a stop to reboot the phone. The Sony head unit also irritated me by frequently starting up with the radio tuned to Radio 3, even though it wasn’t stored in any of the presets. The touch screen was resistive which seemed a step backwards once the phones had capacitive touch screens. Eventually I lost patience with it as it didn’t have DAB and my iPhone couldn’t use Mirrorlink, and CarPlay was only available on newer, more expensive units (no firmware upgrade to add it).

Now both cars have single DIN Kenwood units with DAB and Bluetooth. They just handle tunes and calls while standalone satnavs deal with navigation

I can't find it now but I don't think it works with Bose. It definitely doesn't work with CD changers. Doubt it'll include fitting either but hopefully they'll offer some PCGB discount on some element of it!

Whenever the 997 version appears I will be on it like a hobo on a ham sandwich. Great idea.

Will people have to write a begging letter to the dealer manager if they want a particularly lightweight radio, or one in a special colour?

On a serious note, I'm a bit torn on this. Part of the thrill of a classic is the sentimental bit of it, the idea that it came from an age where things were better and simple and fuzzy and you could smoke in pubs and it was all fields round here and so on. On the other, it seems to be very popular with the people that actually do own them. Which means that it probably does make sense and doesn't detract from what they love about the car.

is there any info how much of vehicle data (Trip Computer etc) is the PCCM Plus able to show? I read about navigation directions being sent to instrument cluster where possible, but reverse info would also be great.

I bought the 2015 model. It's fine, but really I just like the Porsche badge. I'll probably buy this one as well. Fools and their money.

It’s probably cheaper to go to Singer.

I don't think, for the right car (i.e. the best of the classics / older Porsches) this price is over the top. It looks good in the dash and is, clearly, right up to date.

All that said, I recently (on a much lower end scale) thought about the importance of Carplay vs. a decent standard bluetooth connection and good iPhone mount... as I was considering this upgrade on a recent VAG car. Decided against it after borrowing another car with Apple Carplay as standard. It was very disappointing....

On the plus side, it was nice having everything on one big screen including the TomTom Go App and internet radio... but that was where it ended. Carplay seemed very buggy (2020 SEAT) and crashed frequently. The TomTom Go app was missing many features from the iPhone screen version and the whole thing was more inconvenient compared to my usual routine of programming the journey and pre-selecting an internet radio channel into the iPhone before setting off.

I'd therefore advise really testing Carplay with the apps you would use with it before paying for it - especially at this luxury cost level.

I have used CarPlay for years in loads of cars and never found it buggy or had it crash once.

Put an early smartphone like any iPhone up to a 4 or satnav on your dashboard to get an idea how easy that would be.
Depends on what you want to do methinks. I'm used to small screen phones (just prefer them) and I try not to use the touchscreen in my Golf while driving. Can be done but needs help from an understanding Siri and/or steering wheel controls.

Awaiting delivery of a Blaupunkt London 470 for the 996. Has amp outputs for 6 speaker setup (continental doesnt), bluetooth, dab. Pretty sure the SQR is based on this unit but this looks more 996.

Fair play to Porsche, this is a great idea that more manufacturers should do. Whilst you probably don't buy an old Porsche for the infotainment, it's nice to be able to have it if you want it!

Fab that Porsche are releasing a Carplay unit for the older cars but the price is way too steep.

Here's my 997 GT3 fitted with the latest Kenwood double din which has Wireless Carplay, Android Auto, USB, DAB radio and it's less than half the price fitted (and that includes the cost of the fitting kit, loom and DAB aerial) !

If the big one was £5-600, I would probably have one for the 996. The USB box in the cubby is horrid though. Wants a short USB extension that is cut into the back of the cubby.

The small one is a waste of time in my eyes. Too small for effective nav and would be stuck down low in an old 911/944-968 dash. And the price is ludicrous. Better off with a sub £200 blaupunkt or conti and using your phone for nav for the limited time you are going somewhere random. Probably a better sat nav anyway.

Would this work if you had the centre console deleted on a 996? Is the USB panel part of the kit?
