Afternoon everyone. I think it was late Feb early March I filled my car up then realised I didn't have the amount of cash on me I thought I did. I dont carry a card so that wasnt an option. Filled out the paperwork agreeing I owed the money etc personal details and agreeing to pay the debt within 7 days. Went back into the same station 2 days later for more fuel and cleared the outstanding debt while I was in there, in cash. I was told the matter was resolved. End of story. Fast forward to this morning and I receive this text...

Private Reminder to pay £86.07 for fuel from Newbury Extra on 20/03/2020 Car reg (removed) Please pay now by Calling 0151 222 6702 Ref B2007619 Thanks

Upon checking my emails I received an email 4 days ago from a debt recovery firm. Saying if payment isnt received within 7 days of receiving the email the matter will be persued further. I have replied by email saying that I settled the debt 2 days after not being able to pay, it should be on CCTV me doing so and the amount should show on their books. I remember it being between £40 and £50 that I filled up with then couldn't pay for. When I settled the debt I'm sure I was given the normal receipt that you get, I no longer have this though. I'd apreciate any helpful advice please as to what I can do to show that ive cleared the debt etc. Last thing I need to worry about now. Cheers.

It's either this, or an honest mistake (the cashier put the cash in the till, but failed to do the "this bloke has paid" paperwork).

Shame you haven't still got the receipt - that would have put you clear of all this.

You didn't keep the receipt? yikes

Tricky one. I think I'd be tempted to pay just for a quiet life.

Yeah i wish I'd kept better care of the receipt aswell now obviously. Do we really think it's likely that they have pocketed the money? Camera pointing everywhere and at least 2 at the desk. Paying £80 something quid for a debt ive already settled doesn't sit well with me.

1) You made a cods of it by buying something you didn't have the cash to pay for
2) You didn't go straight back the same day
3) You didn't keep the receipt

hehe Sorry, sometimes being a muppet is expensive!

CCTV will have been overwritten by now if it even works so you'll have a job proving anything.

Wait to see if and how they respond to your email is the first thing, no point panicking about something that hasn't happened yet.

If however they stand on you haven't paid then you will struggle to argue otherwise, go back to the petrol station and try and sort it with a manager/ owner, if they maintain it hasn't been paid you may have to accept paying again.

Got a smartphone? Got Google maps on it? Google account? That will show that you revisited the station 2 days later to support your claim, if not so much providing evidence.

If you genuinely did, then get the manager involved and explain that you did return and ask them to review the footage. If it's been overwritten, then that's unlucky, but if the footage is 'missing' then they may be inclined to side with you. It's hard to delete cctv footage without leaving a gap in timestamps.

I'd at least go back and deal with them direct rather than dealing with the debt recovery company.

Seems a good reason to step into the 21st century for payment methods.
So many options out there it's quite strange now to be soley reliant on cash.

Best bet would prob be to go see the lad that took payment and try and get him to sort it or at least for him to speak to his manager.

Also, if the cashier put the cash in the till without filling out the proper paperwork to cancel the outstanding payment, the till for that day would be out of balance and they should have record of a surplus amount that was not allocated to a particular transaction.

If this is the case, the manager should be able to see that your story is indeed plausible.

Who doesn't carry a payment card (or indeed any means of electronic payment) and doesn't go back to pay for it until 2 days later?

Well, apart from the OP that is.

Oh yes, oh very yes!
(It would also have been easy to photo the receipt, I often do that where the issue is likely to be/has been controversial. Useful tip)

The lad who took payment conveniently won't be in for the next few days. How are you going to pay the collection company with no debit or credit card, OP?

...and don't forget to ask them for a receipt.
