The almost completely 'touch screen only ' controls would put me off. It's just needlessly complicated and dangerous.
Sadly I'm inclined to agree I am really not a fan of tablets stuck to dashboards.

That an no 3door option make me disappointed that il probably never upgrade beyond a mk7. 5

Styling wise it's spot on for me, you can tell it's a Golf and a GTI, that's all that matters. I don't care if someone who knows nothing about cars thinks it looks a bit like their neighbour's tdi.

Used to love Golf's. It now seems difficult to buy a more boring car than a Golf / most things from the VW range.

Just looks like the old one with Megane lights grafted on the front.

Love it. I much prefer the wolf(ish) in sheep(ish)’s clothing approach. I’m far too old to carry off the Civic R or Meganne RS without looking desperate.

Pistonheads comments are like an inverse barometer of sales success (Please note I said sales success). Look at this and the Yaris GR? 80% love for Yaris. 80% hate for golf. Let’s see the sales figures for both in 18 months time.

Now if Volkswagen would just add 4wd and a bit more power... biggrin

So long volume knob, old friend. For many years you have happily sat near my hand, loyally adjusting the volume as I wanted. You will be missed....

Let’s face it, it could be amazing, it could be the best hot hatch ever created, but lots round here would still criticise it for being “boring”, or “white goods”, or comment on the way people finance the purchase of one. There are too many cliches to list.

I don’t think I ever use anything but the buttons on the steering wheel. I do however much prefer dials for adjusting air conditioning, seat heating etc.

confused it looks exactly the same as the last Golf, which looked exactly the same as the one before.
But probably bigger and heavier.

As I said on the last Golf GTI MK8 thread, exactly the same comments about "blandness" and "slow evolution" were made on here when the Mk7 was revealed in 2013. That went onto become a Pistonheads favourite. Its always been the same with the Golf GTI, with the possible exception of the Mk5, which looked starkly different to the Mk4 and remains my personal favourite styled GTI of them all, bar perhaps the pretty Mk1.

I like the fact that VW aren't dragged into the BHP wars with the GTI and have made the effort to hone and sharpen an already very accomplished all round product. VW cars tend to punch above their weight in terms of published power vs performance anyway, so I imagine it will be competitive against stuff like the Focus ST and Hyundai i30.

This will be probably be the last ICE powered GTI, so enjoy it will you can.

Is it auto only?
No. 6 speed manual is the standard issue.

Aren't the images and info directly from VW's press release? Specifically the one that happened in late February?

I saw a leaked one of these in red on here and the front looked better with the wide grille than in that picture.

Found it.

You should be VW’s photographer - that one photo has totally changed my opinion of the front end - that’s quite smart!
I fully agree. Looks completely different there to VW's own press shots.

I'm sure the new GTI will be a great car, and the Clubsport S & R cars that follow will be great.

Apart from the bland looks (VW press shots) the only negatives for me is the swathes of shiny black plastic on the dash (which will get either scratched or covered in finger prints - or both) and everything having to be adjusted through the infotainment screen.

Oh, and no manual option will be a big `No` from me.

Any details of what colours are available yet? I'd like to see a green one this time.

It's a bit 'Halfords' isn't it?

Was quite interested in the new GTI as my next car.

But I really dont like the looks, I dont like the interior and all those touch controls would drive me mad.

The new interior format doesn't look like a golf any more for me. The change in display and vent position makes it look very Audi. Golfs had always had that big tower in the middle. Also the center console looks really naff, just big plastic tubs everywhere. Looks more Jimny than Golf GTi.

If this is Halfords, what is the Civic Type R?

If you showed someone cold a Mk7.5 and a Mk8 - could they really pick out which was the new model? I can’t see any real progress (on the outside at least). The inside, for sure, the Mk8 is the inferior car - touchscreen everything is a mistake.
There is no real progress - its gone the way of the mobile phone industry - ran out of ideas.... and the touchscreen thing is madness.

Not a nice looking car at all. The standard wheels are horrendous!
