RE: 2020 Volkswagen Golf GTI: official details

Bland - yes.
But as a 40 yr old i find myself really liking it, obviously the wheels need burning with copious amounts of fire and replaced with a set of BBS rims. but there is something to be said for those subtle plain looks, you have some oomph when you want it and when you pop to sainsburys you don't look like a douche with all your track winglets and Type R style rocket launchers all over the place.
The younger owners may not like it but the market who will have to foot the £40k price tag probably will.
I'd have one, just shame i'm not in the gang who can afford one......

I am rapidly falling out of love with modern cars like this. Far too much tech and bling inside. Give me analogue dials and simple rotary knobs over this please. How many cars will be written off under 2nd/3rd/4th hand ownership simply because some of the gadgets started playing up 10/12/15 years down the line?

But of course, this being PH I must add: boring, white goods, PCP, zzzz, etc. without having any first hand experience of this or anything else of any relevance whatsoever.
Agreed, remember this is not a car forum anymore, but merely an outlet for people's frustration. More proof of this is how people seem to totally ignore the work they have done on the dynamics of the car (pointy front end and active rear end) to focus on the (entirely subjective) negatives like image or looks.

You should be VW’s photographer - that one photo has totally changed my opinion of the front end - that’s quite smart! I'm sure the new GTI will be a great car, and the Clubsport S & R cars that follow will be great.
Apart from the bland looks (VW press shots) the only negatives for me is the swathes of shiny black plastic on the dash (which will get either scratched or covered in finger prints - or both) and everything having to be adjusted through the infotainment screen.
Oh, and no manual option will be a big `No` from me.

Must admit, I'm similar. Touch screens, etc have their place, but I don't think its in a car. The amount of cars with a 'tablet attached to the dash' is growing, and is surely a distraction? But I'm in the minority, bling & tech are what sell a lot of cars nowadays....rather than the actual vehicle.

To be bluntly honest, as a new car buyer, I don't care whether my car will work in ten years time. Why would I?The interior looks a lot more bland than the mk 5 golf GTI which had an interesting interior which was very Gti and quite unique. Progress?
I can't give any comment on the exterior until seeing it in the flesh but I presume the people who design the rear lights have only been working 1 day a week for the last few years. They seem to put very little effort into each new design.
In fact the whole of Seat, Audi and VW design department seem to just be doing as little as possible ... new LEDs, new wheels, sorted !
I know BMW fronts are goppin, but at least their designers spend time at work.

I saw a leaked one of these in red on here and the front looked better with the wide grille than in that picture.
Found it.

That single pic made it look way more aggressive and less Meh. The Mk 8 Golf R might be the perfect all weather daily.
Bucking the trend, I really like this and when the economy settles I could be tempted.
Being mid 40s I come from an era where hot hatches were more subtle, like this and also like the current 308 GTi I used to have.
It won't be the fastest, most exciting, but it will be an excellent compromise and a great all rounder.
I think the interior looks smart. Whilst there seems to be a lot of angst against touch screens I found living with one in the 308 for a couple of years absolutely fine. I do prefer the ones that have been designed in the dash rather than stuck on.

I really like it, i dont like the renderings but any pictures i've seen of the real thing seem to look great. I am a big fan of the mk7 looks-wise and im sure the mk8 will take a little bit of getting used to but im most looking forward to the higher performance models. If this is the most basic GTI then we've all got something to look forward to.

Car manufacturers burying often-used settings like climate-control within touchscreen menus.
STOP IT.
I hope they carry on. We have it on the 3008 and that prevents my wife from changing anything and turning it to manual every single time. STOP IT.
The entire point of climate is that you don't need to change it other than quick demist, which has its own separate physical button anyway as it's a safety feature.

To counter any claim that the Mk8 is more Mk7 evolution than revolution, VW chassis tuning boss Karsten Schebsdat uses his time in the video spotlight to emphasise the extent of the hardware alterations.
Everything listed sounds very evolutionary to me - a few suspension tweaks and new software would seem to sum it up.T1berious said:

Its not a criticism of VW specifically, most manufacturers do the same, ie digitally manipulating the light/shadow in photos which makes them look almost like a photoshop image.
