Will this be the first car ever that looks better with a front number plate attached?!

This is a response to the Chinese market - they want more "brand identity" in their cars...
This is what we're told. But go over there and that's not how it looks at all.

I spend (well spent, given the current situation) quite a bit of time working in Shanghai and all I notice is huge numbers of 'western' cars in odd configurations - fancy a long wheelbase A4 or 3-series, anyone?

None of the locally made stuff has the bizarrely huge grilles now being foisted on us.
The LWB thing is well known. To be honest I'm just regurgitating what I've heard from others, but having heard it a few times from people that work in the industry I'd usually say it's possible.

Anyway, whatever they've gone for it's bloody awful.

That grille though, looks like a couple of dog crates.
If you hit a deer head-on that grille would dice it into cubes.

What on Earth is with the giant snout? Really not liking BMW’s styling of late.

I think the designer must be married to an Apa Tani...

How good looking is that thing??? It's like if BMW had made the Stratos or the RS200. Wow!

As for the M4, a poster above about it being the first car ever to BENEFIT from a UK front number plate, may be quite accurate!

A face only a beaver's mother could love....

I just can't look at it and take it seriously. It looks like one of those photocopies from when the source got stuck in the feeder slightly. Monkey posted on Twitter the other day that it wasn't as bad as he thought it would be; surely that's akin to saying "the charges against Hitler/Saddam Hussein aren't as bad as we thought they'd be"? It's awful, and that's the polite version!

Maybe it just me, but even when I try to look at the front end as a whole, all the other lines of the design (bonnet, headlights) act as leading lines that seem to automatically draw my eyes straight back to that big awful snorter!!

For better or worse, we'll get used to it.
Biggest news, looks like a move to horizontal rather than vertical grille bars. I can't think of another BMW where this is the case in the nostrils?

Like most modern cars it's a hideous mess, but it also comes with a huge sniffer to make sure you catch every bug on your way to photocopier sales meetings.

If it's a great drive it will sell and it may not be so bad in the right colours.

This is true, but it still doesn't make it good looking. We get used to blokes wearing skinny jeans with wide tops and stupid quiffs, as well as mullets. This is the car equivalent.

No, they have models specifically tailored to that market. Stop giving them excuses. "Oh but China made them do it..."

It's lardy, curves-intersecting-everywhere lump with big nostrils because that's what the exterior designers wanted.

What does this provide, dynamically, over an M2? Absolutely nothing. It's all about ego and that's what's reflected in the design. "Look at me I can afford an M4". Wouldn't want it to be mistaken for a lower-tier model ...

Edited by FA57REN on Friday 5th June 10:28
What a truly bizarre post.

Everyone who drives an E-class over a C-class or an A-class Mercedes does so because of ego?
Everyone who drives an A5 or an A4 over an A3 or an A1 Audi does so because of ego?
Everyone who drives a 5-series or 4-series or a 3 series over a 2-series or 1-series does so because of ego?
Everyone who buys an M4 over an M2 does so because of ego?

Ridiculous.

I would buy an M2 over the current M4 for the purely subjective reason that I much prefer the way the M2 looks. I can afford both. Everyone has a different reason to choose the cars they buy.

He sounds like the type to go around keying peoples cars... based on what "he" thinks...

I despise you people, always confusing and bothering yourselves with other people's thoughts and actions... Does it bother you to see people happy living in a way that you don't ?!?

Need to get your head checked...

Just live and enjoy yours.... Damn!!!

Basically, this is the time for Alpina or any other tuning company to sell aftermarket slats just for the lower part of the nostrils. This will remedy the monstrosity somewhat. So long as blocking the grill a bit lower down doesn’t affect airflow and engine performance. After that it’ll be fine to look at and hence live with.

So basically the same as the standard, just with the boomer-tier chrome trim removed in place of gloss black.

How many times does this eye-sore have to be posted? Are you trying to make us accustomed to terrible car design so we bash on it less? hahaha.

I really can't imagine why you'd want to be seen in one of these.

Edited by flukey5 on Friday 5th June 10:21
Why?

Likely enormously quick, reasonably refined and lots of toys.

This is just a typical PH Luddite reaction. Same was said about every previous design change. I’m glad people get so upset about it, better that than a vanilla car wink
