I've been seeing historical cars and bikes with plates that have dashes in them e.g. ABC-123 and others seemingly hand-written in chalk. What is the legality of this, and can plates be re-made in this manner (assuming that it is being assigned to a historical vehicle)?
Prior to 1921 there were very few restrictions on how plates should be made up other than a defined letter/ number size; hand painted were common, and although not mentioned in the regulations, the illustrated example showed a hyphen between the letters and numbers. Post 1921 this hyphen was removed from the illustration. I doubt even the most enthusiastic plod would pull a genuinely old car for minor breaches of these regulations, which I doubt they would know about anyway. But i also would suggest chalk is not an appropriate medium!

Living on Anglesey, I see lots of EY 2x2 plates, but I won’t overload with those.

This seemed a good candidate though
