Max, I'm surprised you dare post on this thread with a user name featuring a mis-spaced number plate! hehe
Haha! I bought it about 20 years ago, just before leaving school, and its not been mis-spaced for at least 15 years. The username, unfortunately stuck..

Mis spacing has only become a bit of a newbie fetish. The original thread (started by me) featured two mis spaced plates.

I was looking to see what sort of classic cars I could buy that 'celebrated' my birth year and found this Lotus Elan for sale, reg no 997 NUR, that was apparently 'owned' by Jim Clark himself...

No apparently about it, I displayed my car with it earlier this year. His company car OK but it's got some intrinsic history with the great man.

The Plate Police will be all over this, but I thought it looked good on this vehicle. I’m not sure what it’s legally supposed to be as it doesn’t seem to appear on the DVLA site.

Did it have another, different plate on the back - like you sometimes see lorries with 'Dave' or whatever on a plate in the front window?

As you say, no idea what HIAB 1 could actually be otherwise. lol

A HIAB is the type of loader crane the lorry has.

I'm sorry to have to bring this to you but misrepresenting number plates has been a notable fetish among Essex's pretentious and aspirational Chaverarti since the DVLA first started flogging the wretched things in the early '90s.

Not excusing the people that flaunt the law and do it anyway, but...

I do wish we could legally 'mis-space' plates in the UK. I don't mean bodging the characters and altering the font etc. but realistically, it shouldn't (and I'm pretty sure it doesn't) affect ANPR readings whether a plate is spaced as AB1 23 or AB 123..

With the lack of police patrolling the roads nowadays it really does seem like a minor law that's never really enforced to a meaningful degree, so I don't really see what benefit it has..

There was a rumour a few years back that the rules might be relaxed for mis-spaced numbers but nothing came of it though.

There could be issues with certain numbers. For example the following are completely different:

80 ON
800 N
8 OON

Spaced together they all read 8OON. This might cause problems with ANPR cameras/speeding fines etc.

80 ON £4300 April 02
800 N £6600 Sep 02
8 OON £5100 Feb 04

+ FEES + VAT Etc.

G1 OAS

Spaced as GI0 AS

Owner reckons the 3 FPN's for misspacing (and one last mot fail for forgetting to swap them over) dwarves the amount of speeding fines apparently avoided.

At some point if that is true, or becomes an attempt to pervert the course of justice.
