Hey all

So i'm still torn on the X5 version to go with.

The Hybrid is about £10k more than my budget and even if you factor in costs of tax on the 30d, I can't see how i'll save £10K+ over the next 5-7 years of owning. Welcome any thoughts?

The other concern whilst Diesel gets lambasted is that some cities are implementing bans on Diesel so will other cities follow through (Islington council in London even charges more to park a diesel!).

The 40i looks meaty so may negate the issue, but just how thirsty is it over the 30d? Mainly town driving but will i be at the pump weekly?

It all depends where you live and your driving profile (average mileage per day/how many long trips/total mileage you expect to do etc...people with the same car can have wildly differing MPG based upon usage.

There are scenarios where the 30d will win and scenarios where the 45e would win and others where the 40i would be somewhere in the middle, but only you know this so just work your own driving profile and do the maths.

If for example you had the ability to plug in the 45e every night and did 10-15k a year on a usage profile between 0-50 miles a day then that would be the winner as your petrol usage would be minimal (if at all?) and you'd more than save the cost over the 5-7 year term you reference, however that might not be your usage profile.

Harry's garage tested the real world performance of the 45e (worth a watch)

My 540i Touring has done 10.9 litres/100 km (26 mpg) over the last 8000 km, mainly fast motorway driving. A 30d would likely have been around 33 mpg for the same condition.

If yours is mainly city driving, expect a 40i to be lower than that. Guess the 85 litre tank comes in handy

thanks both.

I think the 45e would be perfect tbh, it's just the additional £10k that takes us way over our budget as the X5 2019 30d/40i is already top end of our budget.

We do drive on motorways but mostly it's town, school drop offs, local drives mainly. I am just worried on how thirsty the Petrol will be given most SUVs always come as Diesels and the MPG on the diesel is already pretty poor, so on the Petrol will i spend more time in the Petrol station than actually driving anywhere!?

Just for reference my X3 M4.0i does 30MPG on my 80MPH 55 mile motorway commute. Petrol so much nicer than diesel. I don't regret the switch from diesel one bit, although do regret not going for an F Pace SVR:-(

Funny you say that i was intent on the F Pace for a while but heard the internal technology not close to the iDrive entertainment features and general tech of the BMW.

End of the day its an SUV, i'm not expecting great MPG, but heard some people say 15MPG on Petrol which is just farcical really. My main concern is getting stung on the 30D as several cities imposing Diesel bans or additional costs now, and the car will last 5-7years before i switch again. I'd happily get the Diesel but even Euro6 still has its haters remarkably.

I am definitely getting old biggrin

I’ve never, ever, considered Entertainment and Tech, when buying a car.

If it were a telly for the living room, I might give it a bit of thought.

I have a X3 M40i - same engine. Over 15k I've averaged 29.2mpg... if you cane it and drive like a loon then obviously it's 18, but if you drive at a cruise controlled 70 between the East Midlands and Bristol, I've seen over 40mpg on a traffic free morning. Less tolerant than a 3.0d of slab footed driving, but more than possible to get reasonable efficiency if you don't drive with your pants on fire everywhere.

thanks Chris, so given the increase of size and weight on X5 25mpg isn't unreasonable. What about town driving if you can help as that's mostly what i'll be doing, local?

I've got the 540i and tend to get around 26 - 29 mpg. That's mainly around town, a few shorter dual carriageways stretches and quite often the odd sport mode blast. I've had mid 30's on a run. Diesel has never been an option for me and all my cars in the last 20 years have managed 25 mpg at best so I'm actually enjoying the extra economy! It also has a much bigger tank than my last car giving the illusion it's even better.

For 5k annually the least of your worries should be fuel cost. The X5 has an 85 litres fuel tank, IIRC, so you will not be refuelling it every week anyway.

For the mostly urban driving, go petrol, 40i, and enjoy the quiet. No point in paying 10K extra for a hybrid, or to have a diesel for urban driving.

but different to my 15 year old X5 3.0is that i have in Indonesia ... petrol, and lucky if it crawls past 15mpg. Fortunately its only a holiday car and petrol is bobbins out there!

30mpg on a motorway run in a petrol SUV ... thats damn good going, and makes me look at my Rangie wondering if i should think about changing !

The M sport 45e is about 3k more than the M sport 40i that makes it a no brainer to get the 45e especially if you're doing urban short trips.

I'm seeing 40i and 30d (2019 used) for around 40-50k mark (45k would be really my top bracket).

Only 45e's i'm seeing are 55k and that's xLine only, not MSport? MSport seems to be 60+ as Used. If you can point me somewhere i'll gladly check!

This is based off me checking BMW Used and Auto Trader websites

We live about 11 miles North of Leicester, in the Soar Valley. A run down the A6 (5 miles at 70) then 6 miles through to Leicester city centre would normally net me somewhere between 24 and 26mpg. Get caught in stop-start rush hour going to the university (South side of the City) and it's 18-20mpg though!

Sorry I thought you were looking at a new one, after discount there is a 3k difference between a M sport 45e and M sport 40i

Had 12 new BMWs never failed to beat the Broadspeed price at the dealer so take that as your starting point.
