This might come as a shock to the OP but most likely the majority of people buying new sports car are not really enthusiasts. They are just rich enough to afford them.
This. I’d wager the majority of Ferrari’s, 911s etc are not enthusiast owned. Just pretty and expensive and fit in with lifestyle and why not.

Bear in mind the enthusiast models of a range are more often than not some of the best equipped

Want sat nav nice interior and all the toys?
Chances are you just look at the brochure yup that one has the best spec I’ll take it

Does it come as a diesel no? Never mind I only do 3k a year anyway

There is a local lady pensioner near me who just goes and buys the best golf that's on offer at the time.

Last time it was some 2 seat special Clubsport thing.

yes A Golf GTi is a great car for an enthusiast who needs family-car practicality; but it's not an "enthusiast car" in the sense of being a car aimed solely or even primarily at car enthusiasts.

My wife drives an Octavia VRS and she has no interest in cars whatsoever; to her it's just a comfortable, enormously practical family car which has a decent turn of speed for pulling out of junctions or motorway slip-roads. The main reason we got a VRS over the other moderately powerful petrol models? She liked the two-tone seats.

Had a friend a few years back who's wife bought him a brand new Audi S4 convertible for his 40th. It was his money lol

He had no idea about cars and was showing it off to me and another car mad mate.

Took us for a drive. He might as well have been driving a Honda Jazz.

Just no idea of the car's capabilities, didn't know what the paddles on the steering wheel were for, and was shocked when I showed him that the screen on the dash was a sat nav.

He just liked the look of it and that it was a drop top, oh and that it was expensive.
Similar story with a woman I know had a B7 RS4 Convertible when they were new in 2007. She bought it because it was the most expensive A4 cab available. I don't think it ever went over 55mph whilst she had it.

There was also a local businessman near me he had an E39 M5 when it was new, again bought because it was the most expensive 5 Series rather than because it was an M5. I regularly see him on the way to work and would overtake him he was going so slowly. I spoke to his son once and remarked on the car as it pretty nice LeMans blue. He said he may as well have bought a 520i as he does 50mph listening to classic FM.

A Golf is a shopping trolley, not a (driver's) car.

A Golf is the epitomy of common, popular car bought by people that care not about cars.

I was about to comment saying exactly the same thing. Does this lady live in Glasgow by any chance?

Many years ago I used to see an Integra Type R driven by an old lady, who would understandably take quite some time to struggle in and out of it. Would have loved to know the story behind that one.

When my Dad (completely clueless about cars) was looking to replace his 2017 320d touring with a larger BMW, I suggested an M6 Gran Coupe laugh . He ended up buying a 640i GT and thinks it’s an M6 because it’s an M Sport rolleyes

I always remember going out in a Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo that my ex Mrs boss had years ago. I was totally smitten by it and I thought that it was wonderful. Yet he wasn't into cars one bit and he didn't seem bothered about it at all. He said to me that he just bought it because he could afford it. I found it all a bit odd...or maybe it is just me that is odd! biggrin

Why do people still til out thee ridiculous statements. The Golf defined, and has been at the top of the pile for hot hatches for years.

My mum used to drive a Saxo VTS because she liked how they look. She must have been in her 50's at the time.

Oh dear, not this st again. I used to think like this when I was 16.

For your friend - it's a golf. They probably like the colour, the wheels, and the seats were a little comfier than the base model.

Look at it another way: I want my house to have a nice, well tended and mature garden, but I have no interest in gardening.

The performance model in a range is now usually the top of the range as well.
Most manufacturers don’t seem to bother offering a ‘luxury’ range topper any more.

So I could see the scenario where someone setting out to get the ‘best one’ and winds up with the performance version.

Exactly.

For me the MK5 is a modern classic too.

I had always thought that top model golf is among the top hatches. Maybe the base model and diesel golf is shopping trolley.
