I don't follow what is going on with hot hatches, but is that true?I thought it was generally agreed that that ended when the mk2 Golf ended production.
Not really qualified re the history of Golfs... but pretty sure my employer at the time, had this car, from new. It was the top spec golf available on the list anyway, as he got it 'free' via mobility.
He certainly had no idea it was a drivers car. I drove (and abused) it a bit, and felt to me like a nippy fiesta.

But if so, who cares? Would you rather not see them on the road and manufactures sticking all resources into crushingly boring cars?
Just appreciate them is my opinion. I’d rather see a 911 being driven like miss daisy than a Honda Jazz doing the same.

BiL has a 911 that he coasts round corners, that's how he drives all cars. he's a surgeon so it fitted in to the list of acquisitions. i may not be as bold to say 'majority', but it would be a close call i think. obviously depends on defining enthusiast and lifestyle.

Have to agree. Bought a 911 from a lady. Her Ex bought it for her as a parting gift (didn't want a Cayman - "not a proper Porsche"). I frightened the living daylights out of her when I tested it - and believe me I don't think I exceeded 4000 revs or 70mph. She then decided she wanted an SUV - so went out to buy one and bought ..... .... a Volvo convertible (had lovely white leather seats). It was top of the pile years before the Mk5 came out but it hasn't been the best driver hot hatch for decades & the other reason people rave about the MK5 is not that it was so good but because the MK3/4 were a so bad.Edited by ZX10R NIN on Sunday 28th June 12:12

Yes, but mk1/2/5 and more recent cars are anything but ‘shopping trolleys’. I’ve got a mate with an XKR, lovely old boat, but a boat nonetheless and he’s the same. Just makes me laugh talking about cars like the R and clubsport like they are economic hatches to fetch the own brand beans That Jag, great cruiser but show it a punishing road and it’ll be waving the white flag long before those ‘shopping trolleys’ Probably ‘whispers wealth’ though. I’ve skipped all the idiotic “drivers car? ” posts.
Most of the time these models have the most kit of the range and though the highly sophisticated PH community may not be fooled by such trickery, the interior and options will sway some people and will give them the most satisfaction out of the car.

See it quite a bit around here: old biffer wanders into a showroom “id like the top of the range Focus/Civic/A6” “certainly mr/mrs old biffer”. Old biffer then drives off in a Focus RS/Civic Type R/RS6.
Before anyone accuses me of being ageist, I’ve seen all the above around here being driven extremely slowly and cautiously- hence my theory that they ask for the top of the range model and get just that...
I’ve also seen older petrolheads absolutely flying around, which is great - used to pass an old boy in a 911 convertible, roof down in all weathers absolutely tanking on - always made me smile.

Most GT Porsches (GT3 RS GT2 RS etc) and more focused Ferraris ( Speciale, Pista etc) and e.g. Lamborghini Performantes are owned by enthusiasts who drive them for the car they are and not the badge.
Friends mum, retired, widowed, well to do lives in an upmarket village has an X5 M50d with I’d imagine every option on it and a TT roadster for sunny days, both bought new and changed regularly.

Cars spend half the year sat in the garage as she has a villa in Spain. I think he once said the TT does about 500 miles a year and the X5 about 4K if that

Loads of people like to own the GTi for the image, but drive them quietly down the road, they just like the idea it is a GTi as they are usually stuck in a traffic jam at 5mph. Hence why marketing is so important to get people to buy sufficient numbers of the sporty one to make it viable.
Then you get boy racers in fiestas adding additional tiny "fins" to the roof "cos it will make it go fast, like, init!" oh yes, the best one was "alloy wheels are like, well heavy so it weighs the car down in the corners"... I could barely stop myself from laughing in his face at that one, I couldn't be bother to explain it to him as I am guessing I would have to speak slowly and repeat myself a lot.

My dear mother has a sense of entitlement I think that stems from her childhood. As such, whenever she bought a new car, she’d always opt for the GTI or top of the range equivalent, despite having no interest in performance, never revving beyond about 2.5k and in fact would prefer a less stiffly spring car to the performance models.
