It’s certainly fast enough to be considered a supercar but is the most frustrating car I have ever owned. Looks and sound to die for but unusable in any meaningful way except on perfectly smooth roads and in warm conditions. Awful traction and a tendency to jump around on a typical British A/B road means that a Golf GTI would be large in your mirrors and a Boxster disappearing off into the distance. Perhaps the ‘S’ was better?

I am puzzled by this type of comment in this and other forums - there seems to be some sort of folklore that old cars are slow.. A Ferrari 360 has 395 bhp, has a kerb weight of about 1500 kg, will do 0-60 in 4.6 seconds and tops out at about 175 mph (test figures, not manufacturer's stats). I expect many PHers can give me a list of 'fairly regular' or 'ordinary' cars, that will beat those figures, but none spring to my mind. (I don't consider Golf Rs, Audi RS3s or the various high spec Renaults to be 'ordinary', but perhaps that means I'm not a proper PHer!).

I should not have opened this thread. I can report that to insure a 40k R8 is nearly half the price of a 10k VXR to on park on the street in Brixton.

According to the number next to my name, this month represents 15 years since I landed on PH and in all that time I've never known anyone moan about excuses to browse the classifieds. I actually thought browsing the classifieds was pretty much the law??

Considering how little money I have to spend on cars, browsing the ads and auto trader takes up a surprisingly long duration of my day, almost every day.

If it is a hard top R8 rather than the drop top then there is plenty of space if you use the shelf behind the seats. Get a tailored travel bag for something like £120 as I did and you are good to go. Space in the front too for a couple of bags too.

I looked at selling the Duetto and putting it towards a 360.

Something in me just said no to tying up all that cash, when work is in a very fickle industry.

Then my mate died and I am seriously thinking of saying bks and buying the shoes anyway, so to speak.

The R8 V10 is a monster, especially with a manual gearbox. Nobody in their right mind who has genuinely driven one would say that there is an issue in the handling dept - the front end is nailed down, you can get on the power crazy early, it sounds epic with a tweaked exhaust and it is playful - I mean 120mph on opposite lock playful. So lets have no more if this nonsense please!

In terms of performance, yes on paper people may say 'I can live with a second slower to 60' but behind the wheel it is totally different. The V10 is a monster. I don't know the times but I imagine in the mid-range the V10 would destroy the V8 and pretty much everything you will ever come up against whether on the road or on the track. And that V10 is howling away at nearly 9000 rpm behind your head...… Epic.

The perfect supercar for those with hands-on driving experience rather than internet tables and pictures. End of.

Colleague of mine, same age, same industry, made an absolute ton of cash and all he did was buy a fat tail Harley and a Jacuzzi. Contracted a malignant melanoma and in his last few weeks on this earth I tried to call him; his wife answered and wanted to know when she would get 'her' money from a joint business. I can't tell you how deeply that hit, but it was enough for me to turn around and buy two Ferraris in 3 days (250GTE & 512BB).

Yep. We are in difficult times and rightly, many will unfortunately have to think twice about spending. But also losing people makes you think differently about spending on what you want.

An interesting thing to note about the Esprit Sport 350 is that £65k was also the new price. 21 years on and it's the same price.

The v10 is faster than the v8, but the v8 feels lighter and more nimble. If it was about straight line speed you’d have the v10 every time, but I preferred the v8 handling enough that I chose it over the v10.

The v8 isn’t a supercar though.
