Always wanted to love these, like most Jaguars. But no. Too many questionably designed and executed details. Dash design, NavSys, brakes, AWD, A-pillar angle. And didnt drive *that* well either (XF was much better). Also in Germany zero "Ueberholprestige". Never had so many people change into my lane right in front of me as in a Jaguar (any Jaguar). When people kept the lane free when I drive a BMW or MB (even when driving not terribly fast), they will sure change lane and block me when I drove a Jaguar. Very annoying.

It feels like a nearly car. The interior just wasn't good enough quality/quality feel and the styling was dumbed down progressively from the XJ to the XF to this. As said above, the rear lights just look too big as well. The current car is much improved but its too little too late I think.

I so wanted the XE to be good. When I saw how bland it looked in pictures I so wanted it to look better in person, and when I saw how low rent the interior looked in pictures I so wanted it to be nicer in person, and when I saw they were almost all four bangers I so wanted them to at least be decent four bangers.

Then I tried one. Oh dear. X-Type 2.0.

I'm curious - bargain to compared to what?

A 340i must be its closest competitor for this 2016 variant but a 340i can be bought for less.

An S4 Audi is similar money to the Jag...

I have to say that the interior is a let down on these but once you're rolling these are great cars a really good steer proper RWD fun the chassis is a peach, if you can get past the interior & a fair few that I've shown these haven't, there's a good car lurking.

While the 340 ans S4 are excellent cars, they are not in the same league as the XE S in terms of driver appeal. The chassis, steering and engine are so communicative its a different beast. And it shifts.

I’d like to try one of these! I like my wife’s M140i. Its quick, It’s playful, it sounds ok. The interior is typically BNW let down.

I like jags but oddly the only one I ever bought was an XJS 4.0 in 2007!

I need to go and extend my knowledge base

Fair point.

Can find them for a lot less than 24k at the moment, they've depreciated more than the closest equivalent Alfa (Veloce) and it's a better drivers car than a 340i. Neither the Audi nor the BMW ride nor handle as well as the XE.

If you're buying a car for its advanced satnav or nice dashboard materials, then yes, you can get better elsewhere. If you want a do-it-all family car that's fun to drive, it's this or the Veloce, and the Jag has depreciated more (than an Alfa!) To be fair I haven't looked at BMW 3 series prices because the car just doesn't interest me. I'd just assumed, particularly considering how they're considered safe PCP deals, that BMWs wouldn't depreciate more than Jaguars and Alfas.

Another edit: If you read contemporary road tests of the S, it was a revelation. It won just about every test I saw it in, and I saw it compared to the 340i a few times and never lose to it. It's a great car. As said above, if you can get past the interior... which I could. I didn't find it any worse than the 3 series that was current at the time....indeed I found it a much more interesting place to sit. But I accept I'm in the minority there.

24 grand for a 4 year old baby Jag? Seems the only reason you'd get one over a boggo oil burner one is to make progress and on paper there are many, many seemingly (to me) better options to carry 4/5 people and a boot of stuff quickly.

I love these, I heard the auto gearbox was a bit rubbish though. Shame as I like the interior and exterior, watched some youtube videos of it and it sounds epic too.

It's got the 8 speed zf. I think there is a view that the software isnt as good as what bmw did with it, but not rubbish.

Occasionally in drive it can be a bit a bit slower than you want (almost like it would have reacted differently if your foot was a couple of mm further pressed). In sport its obviously not a problem and in manual the changes are instant.

I was just looking at these the other day, they are a great way to fly under the radar and still have a good level of performance.

I've never driven the S but have experienced the gearbox in the 240 petrol. It was the worst part of the car IMO. Same gearbox in the 3 series was.. well I didn't even notice it, which is a good thing, and in the Giulia it felt very well integrated into the car. It's either down to what iteration they're using, or how they've programmed it for the installation, but on the Jag it was reluctant to change down in Drive, and IMO too hyperactive in Sport.

In manual it was fine, quick and responsive, but would still kick down automatically if you put your foot down too hard... and would then not shift up automatically afterwards. I found that habit a bit annoying and something I had to drive around. Also, for when commuting rather than enjoying a back road, 8 gears felt like at least 2 too many for me. So I just used to live with the auto mode most of the time.

I don't know if it's any better in the S.

Probably the same in the S. I guess its just how much it annoys you. I find it a minor issue very occasionally.

I drove the a45 amg before buying the S. Now there is a car that really doesn't want to drop down when in normal drive mode, especially moving away from junctions. Cracking car though , was just a bit too racy for everyday for me

I had the 2 litre diesel cooking version of these a few years back, I can't rate the handling highly enough. It always put a smile on your face. Better handling than BMW M140i and 330i I have had since. The supercharged 3 litre engine is excellent, I have it in my current Jaguar F-type. I quite liked the cabin, but the infotainment system was just ok. The XE looks great from the front, but the rear is too generic. This car is worth it for the chassis and engine alone!!

Dad's got the 250 petrol 4cyl XE and I'd echo that. The cars feel so light it's almost like a hot hatch to drive, but more refined. Pretty swift and I think nicely proportioned and a more interesting alternative to the generic "something German" choices.
