I would argue that it's not just old men who like James Bond. Go to the cinema when the new bond movies launch - its young kids as well....
That's a different matter though because that's young people watching a new film which Aston can continue doing with new models, even if some see it as tacky. Goldfinger (and this) would appeal most to baby boomers who were young at the time, as you go through the following generations the appeal weakens, the film looks increasingly crude and slapstick even, the car increasingly like what dad, grand dad and great grand dad would drive.
Good job we are all different - my 21 year old son loves the older Astons, and was probably influenced by 'James Bombers' as he used to call them as a child.

If AM spent more time trying to run a successful business and less time trying to create tenuous “bond synergies” they probably would be in a better place right now. Didn’t Lotus feature in at least 2 bond movies? Those guys hardly ever mention it...

And yet if we click your profile we see a bunch of ropey old cars that make no financial sense at all. Presumably you just liked them and could afford them?

The purchaser of this DB5 is the exact same as you, but with money.
I judge people on their taste. If you like fake guns and fake oil leaks on your fake classic cars, you have bad taste, I pity you and I believe your money would be put to better use if it would be taken from you.

btw, none of my cars is ropey.

Idiocies like this make me think punitive taxation is a good thing.

Can you imagine the kind of person throwing 3 million quid at an undriveable fake old car with fake glowing machine guns?
Somebody compared it to buying a monet; methinks it is more akin to buying a gold toilet with a broken flush.

And of we click your profile, it seems the only cars you may have are pictures on your bedroom wall. Or maybe some Hot Wheels.

Ford Ranger limited 2020 (my daily)
Toyota CHR Orange 2020 (mrs daily)
Peugot Partner 2019 (work mule)
Gallardo 2010 (holiday car)

You might not like them, that's fair enough. Just as well we all like different things smile

An acquaintance has one of the original film cars. It's a lovely thing, the outside looks immaculate but then open the boot and you can see all the old, period motors for the rear shield etc. I suspect it's the one auctioned by RM last summer (https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mo19/monterey/lots/r0050-1965-aston-martin-db5-bond-car/778818)

It was going to be in the ICE concours event here in St. Moritz in February which was cancelled the day before because of COVID. In the end a few of the folks who were supposed to be at the event (including Jaguar Classic) took their cars out on the frozen lake for some spirited driving. Naturally the local police turned a blind eye.

I do not understand the hate for this, not one bit.

It is one of the most recognisable cars on the planet, for fun they go and build a few more to movie spec and sell them to the super-wealthy. I had a chat to the guys building them a year ago and they thought it was brilliant and really were looking forward to it (the engineers, not the super-wealthy).

Probably made Aston £1m a piece profit too.

And yet the forum is full of people knocking them for building the cars and knocking those who buy them?

I thought we were all car guys here.....

To somebody who earns £50 million a year, this car is c three and a half weeks wages.
So to put it in perspective, if one earns £50,000 per year this car is c £3500. A bargain.

I’d still deem it a massive waste of money and prefer to spend circa £1k on an original.

They probably already have a couple of originals tucked away amongst other exotics.

Fair enough but I’m still out. Personally I could waste the cash. It must be my Yorkshire heritage!

I am with you all the way, far too many people here seem to be envious of others wealth.

Simple question to the previous posters, is it a good thing that British craftsmen are being employed and Do you understand that it helps the UK if some of these cars are exported as well?

I couldn’t dream of spending 1 million on a house, never mind a car back in the real world, so agreed that it make no sense to 99.9 percent of us “normal wage slaves” that’s not the same thing as it being a bad idea

How about jewel encrusted Eggs, imagine pitching that as an Investment here?

“But don’t they taste gritty” “Not microwaveable” “What do they do ?”
“How do they stand up?”
“No toy inside?”

Possibly, possibly not.

The same would have been said in 2007, the last time it was the end of days.

But really this isn't a £100k or even £200k car that someone with a job might aspire to, and change their mind because of the pandemic. It's a £3m toy for someone with so much money they'll be completely insulated from all this stuff (and taste / common sense).

I wonder if we will see GTO's being built for £3.5 million or more now that they have lost their legal battle?

I'm not sure how significantly that will impact things. The less desirable Ferrari 250s have long been chopped up to make reproductions of the more desirable variants, a 250 GTE made in to a 250 GT SWB or something is still a Ferrari, but still not a real SWB and their prices have remained closer to the former than the latter.

Here it appears that companies can make cars in the shape of a 250 GTO, they still won't be able to call it a Ferrari or (probably) a 250 GTO. Just like replica Cobras or GT40 the values won't be anywhere near the originals, nor will it likely spur Ferrari into entering that market.
