Recently bought an imported Legacy, pleased to notice my local Esso garage has 99, as I think that's the rating it was mapped for sometime after arriving here.

When I bought it I filled it up With V Power, and once empty I filled with Esso a few days back. Don't notice any difference, but I wouldn't expect to. As long as it's not going to ruin the engine, I'm happy.

So a brand new, massive Esso just got built next to Snetterton.. literally next door to the circuit... and they only sell the 97RON version of Esso Synergy.

Not even like they don't have deliveries locally, there are 2 other, much older Esso's that stock their 99RON fuel.

Nearly everyone on the track day I was on the other week went 10 mins up the road to the closest Shell to get V-Power. Talk about a missed opportunity in sales, and the opportunity to create new Esso customers...

I suspect Jonathan Palmer doesn't want the race teams popping offsite for fuel rather than using his expensive Sunoco race fuel pumps.

Lol perhaps.. surely ExxonMobil aren't bowing down to the requests of Mr Palmer though?!

My GT86 has four ECU maps you can switch between whilst driving. One is a 95 RON map (standard Toyota) and the others are 99 RON maps calibrated using Shell V Power. With the higher octane map there is a couple of hundred more RPM before the limiter cuts in and the engine a hies 214 BHP (up 20).

If you're just driving around well away from the redline there is no discernible difference between the maps/fuels.
Can you explain what you mean by "pre detonation" in this context? I've heard of detonation and pre-ignition both used to describe knock, this combination's new to me. Unless it was a slip of the keyboard. In which case, perfectly understandable.

I drive a 2008 Nissan Micra 1.2 80bhp. Used to use Asda normal, then switched to Tesco normal. Decided to see the difference in momentum, so looked at shell prices. Shell normal price which would contain E10 costs 1.64, Tesco normal costs 1.59 but momentum costs 1.64. so for the same price I would rather get momentum 99 rather then normal shell as the 5% max ethanol would be much better than shell E10. Can't imagine how much more expensive v power would cost.

Also I've noticed a difference in performance, yes I know it's a banger car and won't be huge, but I'm a bit of a racer and even I can feel a difference, even if it's not an increase in power, the car just feels cleaner to drive, more responsive when accelerating, through med revs. This was my first tank of m99, will carry on using it from now on and hopefully will clean the engine overtime
