I drive my lorry on the motorway, 56 mph. 4 lanes, I'm in lane 2 overtaking a slower lorry. Making progress, not quickly, but making progress.

The amount of car drivers who just sit behind me rather than overtake at a safe opportunity, including when lane 3 is completely clear, is unbelievable.

I always wonder what's going through their minds at that time.
What's going through my mind is "don't make 3 across".
As taught on advanced driving courses, nothing to do with crosswords.
You've made this ridiculous comment before and been shot down on it, yet herd we are again...and 911 here as well...something smells a tad fishy

This is not taught on advanced driving courses (speaking as someone who was a ROSPA gold for more than 20 years).
What is taught is avoiding being the ‘meat in the sandwich’ which for obvious reasons will happen most to people who choose to be middle lane hogs.

I was in deepest Kent the other weekend. On my way back I pulled 2 or 3 overtakes. It was around 8am on a Sunday morning. The roads were quiet, my overtakes were sensible. Every time, someone coming the other way (half a mile away) started flashing furiously at me.

I've heard of this happening but this was the first time I've ever experienced it first hand.

Really really odd.
It's been happening in Berkshire and Surrey for over a decade sadly.

I've quite often been flashed by the dawdler I've overtaken too. frown

Nothing, absolutely nothing.

They'll be listening to music/radio/a podcast, or mentally planning a shopping list, or thinking about work, or talking on the phone to someone using hands-free.

They won't even have noticed you, let alone wondered if they should overtake you.
I think, we as.the users of a "motoring enthusiast" forum, would probably be very surprised at how often this is true.

It's amazing just poor the vast majority of the population are at driving. The standard to pass the test for licence really needs to be raised. No concept of space around one, no forward planning, no observation beyond the end of the bonet (or beyond Facebook on the phone screen). It definitely feels much worse than ever, and it really feels as though there are more and more people on the roads, combination of population growth and an increase in the use of the car for all types of journeys.

Tomorrow, everyone on this thread, pay extra attention to the behaviour of all the cars around you, it's very apparent. Eg how regular is is to be either behind or alongside a car approaching a round about that is clear and that car still slows to an almost stop, before the driver wakes up and checks to see if clear before going.

Worse still, us enthusiasts are demonised if we happen to do an occasional 90 on a county road when clear observation allows. We are the menace, not the legion of absolute incompetents we share the roads with.

It’s either confused oaps mixing up the wash wipe with the headlight flasher or letting you know it’s safe to pull in like those long trucks.

If oncoming it’s good to flash back, just being friendly saying ‘hello’.

On standard roads I think that most people perceive overtaking as dangerous and won’t do it. Anyone they see doing it is driving dangerously and they must flash their lights to tell them about how dangerous it is.

I thik you are right, except the "most people" bit. "Some people" is likely accurate.

Alternatively, don't dick about at 56 mph in the outside lane. Get a move on.
Who is in the outside lane at 56mph in this tale?
The car driver slowly drifting past the lorry in the adjacent lane.

I agree with other posters the majority of drivers just don't give it a thought and just drive along thinking of something else. I ended up at the back of a 5 car train following a tractor. The road was open, very few blind corners and plenty of overtaking opportunities but the 4 cars between myself and the tractor just plodded along nose to bumper it was infuriating.

You often have to leapfrog past the timid drivers and make space. Lots of friendly flashing of course as they see proper overtaking demonstrated.

We take it for granted about driving and trying to do it well

There basics millions barely manage, signalling, speed awareness, lane discipline, knowing how big your car is, looking ahead

All you need anywhere is one person like this and you are stuck, because to them driving is scary, difficult, or just simply something like paying tax, you begrudgingly do it because you have to

Its happened for years! the amount of times I've overtaken safely on a straight road to have some doddery old road captain try to blind me from 700 yards away is ridiculous. I often wonder what their thought process is? Do they see the same as me or have they got a fisheye lens pair of glasses on that make everything appear half a mile closer?!

I found it really odd. I was solo in a c400bp car so was hardly on the other side of the road for long. And the flashers were so far in the distance that I was back on the left hundreds of yards before we met.

Daft behaviour.

Perfectly put.
Blonde lady behind me in a Merc this morning was leaving oddly large gaps so I started paying more attention. She was doing her hair and makeup. How much time is that really saving?!

Came off a roundabout driving my partner's Saab 93 Aero at the weekend. It turned into a glorious straight bit for easily 1/2 a mile. Kept the power on and sailed around a Corsa with no effort. Cue beeping horn and flashing lights from the old git driving. As we had the roof down I couldn't resist a few waves of appreciation of his positive review of my maneuver.

It seems to be more of an issue in densely populated places like the South East.

I've done multiple overtakes in Cumbria, Northumbria and Scotland without any of that flashing nonsense. That's one of the reasons I enjoy visiting those places!
