I read this / these threads avidly, nay, religiously and having sold a few am now in the position I want another barge. flogged my Bentley, the XJ-S and am down to just the SuLK 350.

There is a lovely looking CL500 in Almandine Black ( a colour I was not aware of, did have an Almandine red SL 500 a few years ago) on a 'W' reg for £3-4 thousand. What are they like? Last I heard they were a damn good way to lose a lot of dough and be deeply unhappy but having had two Bentleys, I'm used to being poor and very unhappy, so one could appeal...

Sounds like you know this environment pretty well. Obviously, we'll advise you to go for it. Obviously we'll want a forecourt shot.

Well, what are you waiting for ... ?

My only experience of a W140 was in a rather dog eared early 600SEL and it left a big impression. That V12 was just fantastic, rated at 400bhp but they were big barrel chested naturally aspirated horses that got up early and worked hard rather than the turbocharged horses that always leave me slightly suspicious about their work ethic.

My impression of the car was dominated by the engine, but I do recall thinking that while it looked and felt decidedly dated in 2005 it made the XJ12 I had at the time feel like a Happy Shopper barge by comparison. It was nothing like the rather hair shirt feeling W124.

Just an FYI I'm about to go full eBay shortlist DEFCON-4 on some Audi a8 (d2) v8 quattro's. They're around £2k so at least when the timing chain lets go I can buy 1.5 more a8's and still be within thread. I'm hoping to get one with a fridge between the rear seats and/or the solar panel sunroof which I have no idea of the purpose of. TBC! How exciting..
We love it when a threadist goes full-on mental. Do it, if only to get the cool-sounding solar sunroof.

Well, this thread has rocketed through the early pages today - I've had longer poo breaks than it's taken to get to five pages.

Moving on...

W124 looms. My diesel's loom announced its will to depart this mortal coil last year (as, in fact, did a significant amount of the car, and thus a noticeable part of my wallet). I had the crispy bits rewired from scratch by Sileck down in Kent for £440 incl fitting. From memory, that was the glow plug harness and the other engine-operating bits (ie not lights etc).

Given the quality of the work done, I thought that was a reasonable charge. I think, if obtainable (they're not), the affected looms would have been c£1200 from MB.

I think you should buy THISmoney pit keenly priced example instead, at a haggle over £2k. I reckon it could make you really unhappy.

If it's had the ABC serviced and been reasonably well maintained early I think you've got a fair chance of a year or two of decent use, particularly if you're willing to ignore the odd fault or spurious dash warning like "SUSPENSION FAILURE STOP IMMEDIATELY" or "DRIVE IMMEDIATELY TO MERCEDES WORKSHOP WITHOUT CHANGING GEAR".

Isn't the drivetrain itself pretty robust on these? The horror stories are all ABC related, and if you have a decent specialist and another car to use while you source 2nd hand bits or work on the car yourself then it could be... ok?

They do look fantastic don't they. I like the W216 a lot too, but IMHO this is the best looking modern Mercedes.

Do not want yet another silver car! SuLK is silver, the Merc before it was silver, The Kia was silver... and so on. Quite like silver but, really, too much of a good thing chaps! Sadly it seems most cars for sale are... silver.

How could one best describe an old Volvo without using cliche’s? It is true though, I still see many about compared to its contemporaries like the Sierra estate and the lesser spotted CX safari

Love this thread, reading about all the great bargist buys has got me looking at W12's

At the moment 1st choice Audi A8 D3 flavour, starting to look at LHD cars in Germany as very few seem to come up for sale in the UK

Or I may hold out while I convince myself a Bentley Flying Spur would be the better buy despite being well above thread budget and more ruinous to maintain than an S600
