Why do people still care about Setright's opinions?
Because they are living in the past smile

Apparently Lotus made the benchmark fwd platform.....3 years behind the DC2 smile

Perhaps he didn't realise it was an M3 or else was hoping to catch you napping?
Yes and I think that he was trying to catch me napping to be fair. I've always been up for a bit of the traffic light grand prix though...so I'm always ready! biggrin

In saying that though it has been a while since I've been involved in anything like that. The 200SX was my favourite car regarding that though, and I was always getting involved with stuff in that. driving

I think my dad was a bad influence on me when I was younger...because he always used to do it too! smile

It could be that he knew full well he would ‘lose’ but wanted to see what a M3 could do. It’s something I would have done. hehe

Actually while typing that I remembered - in my old Alfa I once floored it as I came onto a motorway with a new Ferrari behind me (360 I think) because I was looking forward to him roaring past at full pelt! He didn’t though, but that’s fair enough.

Me too! thumbup

I've done that a couple of times when I was in my old V6 Mondeo when I've seen a C63 AMG(6.2 V8). Thankfully both times they booted it so I could enjoy the noise they make...even if I did get left for dead both times! hehe

Awful list.

TT? Lol. What a joke. Why not include the VW Beetle also?

The BMW coupe is the only good choice here. Lovely car. Though I would opt for a more modern version of it by getting the new Supra.

I feel any Porsche is a yawner. Boring. I think because I own one. What’s not to like? Unreliability. Bought mine certified and still broke down after 2 years. Repair costs are 10x a standard car. Not even sensible because Porsche just charge whatever they feel like. Surprisingly, insurance companies treat it as a normal car so nice surprise there. I would pass next time around.

McLarens are some of the ugliest sports cars ever made. I would never get one. Ironically, their first try, the MP4, is quite beautiful. But I won’t touch it due to unreliability.

I would go back to BMW and get a M2 manual. For me, a sports car has two doors, manual preferable, and great acceleration. Normally, I like four exhaust pipes but those models are usually top of the line and quite expensive. I remembered paying 50 dollars for an oil change at BMW service and I was like damn because I only paid 30 bucks to do the same for my previous Nissan 240sx. I imagined it’s a bit more now at BMW, what like $100? Hey, beats the min $500 they charge for oil change at Porsche. Robbery. After a while, it’s not even how much you have but you are tired of being a sucker and getting ripped off.

i was looking to get a Caterham next. Better can that idea. clearly not a sports car.
And the Ariel Atom as well. Those pair are faster than almost all on the list.

As for the MX5, there is the retractable hardtop RF version which I have and whilst is slower than my Impreza on the Peak District country roads I drive every day, there's a lot less in it than you might expect. And it's definitely faster than any FWD GTi/ST/whatever which are often a real handful on these roads.

So happy to see the Audi TT 1st in the list, I have had Porsche's 2 911sc's and a 993. To me the best car I have totally enjoyed is my Audi TT 225 Quattro, it just ticks all the boxes for the price. Owned for 16 years and still smiling,

A good car absolutely

A sports car though? For me definitely not, I had one and it was the most boring car to drive

Cant agree on the "Sky's the limit" choice, the Porsche is a very good car but the McLaren 675LT is in a different league.

Yup, it's still true today - and MX5 is still a sports car.

Lotus pioneered the front wheel drive sports car with their highly regarded Elan M100.
I'd agree the MX5 has always been an affordable sports car.

But if FWD was so great I have to wonder why every Lotus since the M100 Elan has been RWD! confused
The MG is an even more affordable sports car (TF perhaps better for sporting, F like I have more towards a classic/comfort ), so if the MX5 is allowed in then it should be on the list too
( and many models greater power like my 143vvc probably tuned closer to 160 with all the TF 160 esque parts out the factory ).

Admittedly the MX is far more tunable but this wasn't a list about tunable sports cars
