I'm on V8 number four now, they definitely get under your skin, I can only agree with what's been said, the engine dominates the car even when you're just plodding about. The way the noise changes from a deep burble to an angry snarl as the revs rise never gets boring, neither does the way the torque kicks you in the back when you drop it down a gear or two and give it some stick and whilst my V8 isn't massively powerful compared to some the power delivery still feels effortless even in a big, heavy car, it just never seems to run out of steam. I quite fancy going for a drive now! smile

I've had 5 V8's and I'd do anything for another.

Hilux 3.9 Rover V8
Monaro 5.7 VXR
Land Rover Discovery 3.9
Monaro 6.0 VXR
Erm another Monaro 6.0 VXR biggrin

There's something inexplicable I've loved about big simple V8's since I was a kid. I've always had a fascination and a dream to own a proper American muscle car. The real deal 60's thing. One day I might but prices are rocketing now! Anyone in West Yorkshire wants to give a guy a ride in a yank tank... V10's and V12's may be bigger and more exotic, modern ohc engines may be 'better', but for me you can't beat a pushrod V8. It's all in the noise, the way the car shakes like it's alive, the low down grunt from nowhere, the noise again...

I've even got a wine rack made from one hehe

Edit - also top fuel dragsters are the nuts

My two V8s, and one V10. The Audi’s definitely going, and the SL, with 800 miles in it in ten months may be next.

The noise, the power and the torque.

And the fact that a Range Rover should only ever have a V8 petrol engine under its bonnet.

I have had everything from a 3 cyl to a V10
I always have V8s. The thumping feeling of power, the rumble and the effortlessness if the V8 still gives me a feeling in the pit of my stomach when I nail it.

I remember being in town years ago and a ferrari of some sort came up from behind. At first I heard the engine noise and high revs. When I looked at it it wasn't going fast at all despite all the revs. Would it have been a v10 perhaps. By contrast the v8 I was driving could almost shake the ground.

This is my first V8 and I agree with what everyone says about the noise.
I thought the std exhaust was a bit tame, so went for an X-Pipe and 2nd cat delete (like everyone else does).

The noise it makes is lovely now.

These just look so right - yours looks stunning BTW.

I've had a few v8's but only really one with the right noise.

Merc s500
BMW 745
P38 range rover
Classic range rover
Xc90
Cayenne turbo
Nissan armada
And a chimaera

Not hard to tell which one of the list made the nice noise, but for me, the best was the cayenne, old, leggy, but a great engine if maintained.

V8 with side pipes means setting off all the car alarms in a multi story car park - why would anyone want to do that? :-)

Having driven many, many miles in various L322s, I'd take the 4.4 TDV8 over any of the petrol ones every time.

Just realised that I have had a V8 now since 2006. First the RS4 and then my current XKR. As said before the noise is the main reason followed by the silky smoothness under the accelerator pedal. A quick dab of throttle provides the automotive equivalent to a squirt of single malt whiskey.

It's mostly the noise, I don't really like screaming high revving engines but the deep bass rumble of a heavy calibre V8 idling or gently woofling is just delightful. They are smooth but I'm not convinced there's much tangible improvement over a six cylinder engine in that regard.
I love both and I think it depends the car tbh.
Exactly right

Lots of guilty pleasures in the wrong engine in the wrong car too though

This thread needs to be about the pleasure we're losing through the push for downsizing and forced induction

I’ve had a few yank V8s and one of the things I loved is when you start them up you feel the engine rumbling through the whole car and when you’re stood next to them you can feel the bassy idle, it’s totally different to a loud exhaust on a smaller engine.

^ This plus my turbo's would speak to each other before they made boost. A whispering noise. It would take me a quarter of a mile to relax from the adrenaline hit.

I did apply to join, but sadly the Northern accent and propensity to put chips on my gravy ruled me out.

The wife's car and the motorbike are in matching colours too...

Get one, then you will know!!!! Ive had 5!!! C55, S4, ISF, C63, RS4

The sound is amazing and cannot be beaten - only by V10, V12 and the instant power/ torque is addictive.

My analogy is that its Rock and Roll vs Nicky Minaj - no comparison. I now drive a flat 6 which is good, but long for a V8 again one day soon!!
