In line with the upcoming regulation banning European cars from year-end I'm switching my German and Italian ones for English, so out went my Abarth, to be replaced by a range Rover, the R8 was swapped for a 650s, and now I need to decide what to do with my SL63.

Given how much softer the new sports car is than the R8 that I had previously (it was a Plus, so a very firm road setup), would going in the opposite direction and replacing the SL with an open-topped Exige be a nice way to round out the set, or is even that version designed to fry the senses, and light up the synapses, making it pointless for anything other than out-and-out hooning?

Or is it too close in purpose to a Mclaren; is the handling enough better to offset the performance so that the Lotus would actually get used very often?

I can feel some test drives coming on, if they ever become a reality again...

I think it's one of the options for a no-deal Brexit. We return all our foreign muck, and the continentals give us back our classic English motors.

We can't be a truly sovereign state unless you swap your new BMW for a shagged out LHD Rover.

No-deal means that no European cars will be legal to drive on UK roads, and vice-versa.

It’s not one of the more serious effects of no-deal, but worth being aware of, if only to beat the December rush.

Ffs.

I was enjoying a unicorn of a PH thread where everyone agrees the car is fantastic and simply appreciates a truly fantastic bit of British engineering which has developed into the absolute beast it is today!

Still looking for a 350 btw. PM me babe.

Exactly you won't be able to drive a Porsche, Lambo, Fiat etc. And as for a BMW or Audi...forget it.

Is this a wind up?

Fascinating thread. Brings home,
  • Just how much enjoyment people get out of these cars,
  • How varied the cars are around a simple starting point, and
  • The colossal challenge facing Lotus with its "next car", whatever that may be.

Have had an S1 Elise, S2 Elise S Type 25 and S3 Exige S.
All different and brilliant.
Sweet spot for the Elise IMHO needs 200hp, my S1 was fun but underpowered.
Exige was brutal and fun. Miss it everyday, but more speed cameras and busier roads started to take the shine off ownership.

A supercharged Exige is possibly the only thing I'd consider selling my Alfa for, having spent some time in a 200bhp honda Elise then a supercharged brutally quick Elise I've always fancied a factory car.

I disagree - fun cars should be in bright, fun colours wink

Besides, with a Lotus you need it in bright yellow/orange as a safety measure to stop SUVs and European lorries from squashing you.

That is a stunning looking car.

Had I been based in the UK at present, I might have been tempted to bid on this.

Agreed on the unicorn thread - no angst.
Exige is great and always seem tempting. You get an Elise that also sounds fantastic. However it seems more than I need and I’m not sure that they look better than an Elise. Would love to at least try one some day.
Also agree that the love for their cars makes it tough on Lotus when bringing out their next car.

Lotus have a difficult line to tread. They need to make a car that has wider appeal (therefore more practical as an everyday proposition) than the existing Elise/Exige but without alienating their existing fan base.

Would I really have wasted my hard-earned money on a Range Rover and a McLaren if someone had just been pulling my leg over this?

It was covered on Reddit/girlsgonewild in August.

True. I saw it in Shaved Haven in the September issue as well. They said all foreign cars on the road will be crushed by 3rd January 2021 so I am selling my old BMW and will get a McLaren Senna now.

What is safety in a crash like with these cars?

I ask because I saw a gen 2 Elise cause a pretty deep cut in the driver's head when it has been rear-ended (while stationary) by a BMW travelling at about 10 mph. There was a bar behind the driver's seat which upon impact, caused the cut, through the seat.

I have always REALLY wanted an Exige, especially a S3, but seeing the damage that such low impact caused spooked me out. I shudder at what might have happened had it been a higher speed.

As you can see from the picture, it was really low speed.

And before people lay into this post, let me be clear. I want to be talked into one. I just want some clear experience/advice on how it deals with the information above.
