Imagine my surprise when I went to fit the ISOfix base and found out my E Class estate (possibly the most ‘family’ of family cars) doesn’t have ISOfix.

Absolute. aholes.
It's a rook anyway. It adds very little by way of convenience and nothing by way of safety. It's all about selling child seats at a higher price. You can retrofit it easily and cheaply enough if you're bothered.
Disagree re convenience, Isofix is much much more convenient (and fool proof) than strapping the baby/child seat in with the seatbelt (not to mention the seats/bases that have a swivel function).

When you're getting into the car for a drive at 2am to settle a baby who won't sleep, last thing you want is to be faffing about with the seat/seatbelt.

I did post this a few weeks back. Beware though, it has about 2 weeks MOT left .

My E500 is going to be with "the man" for weeks....perhaps I could be persuaded to take on a temporary barge. If he would stick an MOT on I would seriously consider it.

Remember those crappy £99 fitted glass hatches that were retro-fitted to all the basic stuff that didn't have a factory roof option?
My first car had one. BMW E30 316. I hated that crappy glass hatch. Not factory. How I longed for a proper slide and tilt job.
A family friend did very nicely for himself fitting these things to Novas and such like in the 80’s and 90’s, with a little sideline in clocking leggy Mercs fresh out of Belle Vue for traders.

‘‘Twas him that pulled the instrument binnacle out of a particularly leggy S class, only to find a handwritten label proclaiming “Not again!”

£80 option, says the price list for my 2007 W211. I was surprised when my 2004 V70 didn't have it as standard, I think it was a £40 kit to add them.

As R129SL says it's not necessary really, but the incumbent Mrs Stickleback at the time was too much of a slapdash incompetent to be trusted with a task as difficult as threading a seat belt through a gap; before I fitted them I'd often find the seats rocking almost completely insecured.
Similar dismay in our household when it was discovered that our S211 didn't have it. I have recently reasoned that a seatbelt that is designed to deal with people weighing more than 100kg threaded through the structure of the child seat should comfortably protect a combined weight of less than 25kg....
My E46 had Isofix, as do all the current cars (including the Z4).

Tight squeeze in the back with the 6 Series though (passenger seat fully forward!)

The E63 isn't suitable for a young family, period. Even on their fwd facing child seats and their legs are too small to fold over the seat base, either the front occupants are too far fwd for the elegance of the vehicle (not to mention comfort), or there is too little room for the child.

I've never been bothered with isofix, a seatbelt is a doddle to fit onto car seats.

What's the story with the E500?

Probably something you can help with in terms of advice Michael. I suspect the front ns airmatic strut has gone . I know replacing is easy enough, have also decided to do a service now whilst in, and to check over another couple of minor issues. Of course i realise it may not be the strut and could be a valve block issue, air line, etc. Have you replaced any of your struts?
If so, did you use genuine Mercedes, Bilstein (are they oe manufacturer?). Any advice welcome.

If it has gone I am of a mind to replace both despite the eye-watering expense. At the relatively high mileage, it will only be a matter of time before the other goes.

Workshop is apparently very busy at the moment and I couldn't even get the car in until the 10th. Going to have to be on a truck too...all the way from an island off the west coast of Scotland ....long story. "Enjoyment" of aforementioned island roads may have led to the demise of the strut.

My apologies. It does now have a full (+ a bit) ticket though

It was certainly not ideal as my back will attest to. irked E91 was the main baby transporter, but iirc was with the mechanic having some work done so the E63 had to step in.

X5 is much better. biggrin

I love sunroofs, particularly glass roofs. Makes fir a pleasant ambience.
yes and i quite like the current trend for "panoramic" roofs. I quite like Harry Metcalfe's old Lamborghini with the big perspex roof too.
My wife has a citroen cactus with the full glass roof. It's ace as not only does it make the otherwise fekkin Ugly car airy and bright, but it gives me 2" more headroom, so I actually can drive it!

The front shocks were replaced prior to my ownership.

The o/s/f at 102k miles and cost £727.20. OEM strut.

The n/s/f at 113k miles and cost £903.60. OEM strut.

At 160k miles, I noticed the o/s/r sinking. A quick fix was tried by re-sealing the reservoir by grinding it down and then applying quick steel. That cost £252 and it completely failed within a couple of weeks. Balls.

The 'man' advised that both rear units are replaced at the same time, due to the need to drop the rear subframe (and age etc...). That cost £1k for the OEM struts (on the exchange cost with MB) and 5.5 hours labour.

To the best of my knowledge, there are no Arnotts available for airmatic (I can only speak for the rear) and the Bilstein items are the same/similar cost. AFAIUI, the airmatic system needs to be re-primed with nitrogen after strut replacement.

It's what convinced me to chop in the 645Ci and just run Bertha the old barge until Magnus.

Yup, I actively avoid them.
They often rob headroom and the memories run deep regarding a 90s Renault Clio..
Of course it leaked.
But it also creaked in the cold.
And when open let in lots of lovely noise, but precious little air.

The hassle outweighs the minimal benefit for me.
It's just one more thing to go wrong as far as I am concerned. Some modern cars don't even have a winder on the sunroof motor to close it manually.
I don't actively seek out cars without them - some cars I have you got no choice all came with sun roofs

I have always liked the extra light in the cabin from a glass sunroof - not so fussed about steel ones

However the risk of leaks, condensation in winter and the fact that fully open or even tilted they are noisy and don't add much in terms of ventilation means that as I have got older I'm much happier without one biggrin

OK, second go. More expensive, but frankly after two pages of sunroof discussion, I can't see how anything doesn't go.
