I do maybe two tip runs a year along with maybe one trip to a DIY shop that necessitates a big load space.

Despite this, my other half feels I need to replace my Cayenne with another ‘practical car’ rather than a Boxster. Might just get a Fiat Multipla to leave on the drive and annoy her and use my electric scooter for all other stuff.

Love this thread for the endless possibilities it throws up when I’ve got a wedge of cash in my skyrocket. (Like now)

Yes, I just can't get enough of loading up the back of my lovely freshly cleaned Volvo, with many bags of detritus. Most of which usually stinks of rotting cabbage and musty mothballs - to gingerly drive half an hour to the tip so as not to deposit said contents all over the boot with enthusiastic cornering. Then the best bit is waiting 2 hours in a queue to get in, all the while choking on the rancid fumes from the back, to then have some officious b6st6rd stick his face in my business and tell me where to put each bag/box to meet their recycling targets.
Once you finally get home, you then spend the next 2 hours fumigating your car and cleaning it again.

I share this sentiment as a fellow resident of the borough, except the garden waste bin bit as they do do them. You just have to pay for it. Unless you have a suitable Volvo like us!

Friend of mine bought a 65k mile 3.0,CDi. With the right thing plugged in, the car showed >250k. Possibly less risk with a petrol, but we all know what they're used for!

My Renault Trafic van does the tip runs. There is nothing more liberating than slinging whatever old crap you like in the back of it, knowing that you can't make it look any more awful than it is already.
My local authority charges for bringing a van to the HWRC, even if it's your personal vehicle and you're an accountant or the like.
We get a dozen vouchers a year to take a van in, free at the moment, have to apply for it every year though.
That's why a large people carrier comes in handy - my T5 Caravelle is the most useful family car we have ever owned and is allowed in the tip, though I tend to use my old Accord for tip runs to avoid getting the Caravelle too stink - my wife and the kids do a good job of grossing it out as it is.

I was looking for local thread barges for sale on Autotrader today, doesn't seem to be much out there.

I keep thinking about replacing my van with a S210 of some description, but then I need a sheet of 8 x 4 for something and I come to my senses. The call of a 430 or 500 is strong though...

I can offer some advice; take the fking stupid wheels off.
yes

And what is it with people putting new cars on the old style black/silver numbers plates. I think it looks ste. Obviously in this example any thoughts on number plates are secondary to the horror of those wheels. I'm sure somebody here will know better than me, but wasn't it back in around 1974 when they changed to yellow and white, with no back-dating?

I was a wee nipper at the time, but I think for a few years, you could regally put on black plates with silver 3-d style lines in the plate - my dad had a set on a Maxi(!) which I remember thinking were ultimate cool back then.

ETA - some most excellent Friday night fodder posted this week - well done everybody.

And CdG - dinner date with the 356 lady lookalike - very impressive, sir. I hope you had a good evening. I've lost track of your love life, but is this different to the Iberian librarian?! Glad you're enjoying the delights of Europe either way!

Oh - and after quick early bidding up to £6k, the W124 hasn't moved since. I'm still hoping a few bidders will be softening themselves up with a couple of cheeky cocktails before hitting the bid button later this evening!

Should I be pedantic and point out that the 430 is an S210 and the 500 is an S211 - or should I encourage the obvious mission creep here...

A top spec Titanium X Sport S-Max with the 240bhp 2.0 Ecoboost and powershift auto is your friend here. Big as a house inside and handles like a car rather than a cross channel ferry. If you really need more space in the third row try the Galaxy. Latest shape models are really rather well screwed together as well.

Thanks dapster, but the thought of a spacious cabin on a long journey for my family of four plus three grandparents appeals, hence the Viano.

I think you need a Tesla model X. I have only been in a Viano once but the NVH will be a big step down from what you are used to in the E500 for a long journey.

PS you may have noticed that I survived the surgery and my convalescence has been augmented by the best ever Friday barge posting that I have seen. Good work.

A Tesla for a long journey? It's a risk imho with the variety in ages on board - I wouldn't want to get stranded. An interesting thought, however.

I believe that the better specced (ambiente) Vianos have air suspension.

That's great news.

Now get posting barges from places we don't know about (or don't dare to tread, Facebook springs to mind).

Oi! I want a word with you!

That sodding Merc you put me in touch with the seller of has cost me more than I paid for it in parts alone... And it was still a bargain biggrin

Hope all is well. How's the G wagon holding up?

We had one for a couple of years and as family transport goes it wasn’t bad at all. Unfortunately the one weak point (with our one) was the keyless entry so ours was stolen, recovered and then stolen again - never to be seen again the 2nd time. The cctv footage of them stealing it (the 2nd time) was impressive. They drove up on a moped and within 30 seconds they were gone. No broken windows just some clever IT work and they were straight in.
