Morning all. I’ve been a lurker on this thread for many years and have enjoyed all the barge life tales, so I when I actually bought a car that was “featured” I knew people would enjoy it.

In the first lockdown my Saab 9-5 aero started having auto box issues and I was bored of it, so I blind bought an 03 E 320 cdi. Obviously this had every documented issue happen to it over the last year (conductor plate failure, abs ring failure, tailgate handle, duovalve, warped brakes and of course SBC timer.
I liked the car, but the diesel is noisy and not really required for my mileage, so was vaguely looking for a petrol one.

E500s seem to be either high mileage and mid thread or crazy priced at £7k or so.
This silver 04 was on here a couple of weeks ago and I spoke to the owner about it’s history and despite plenty of interest was the only one willing to put money down.
I got a lift up to Derbyshire yesterday and picked it up:
04 E500, 99k miles, great bodywork for age. No warnings and drives really well. The airmatic all works and the gearbox is smooth. No memory or heated seats, but sunroof.

It needs a service and the duovalve is stuck on this one also I shall diy these. I plan to have a specialist service the gearbox (7speed is a bit harder than the 5) and health check the sbc.

Here she is with the old cdi. My neighbours are asking about prices to local airports.... Anybody need a cheap diesel?.....

Top lurking. That's the way to do it, introduce yourself with a buy. Nice work, and welcome.

I was out to dinner with the new Ambassador last night and en route to the Residence stopped at my local supermarket for Ferrero Rocher*.

This mega-barge turned up as I was leaving. Unlikely to ever feature in our meagre budget but quite an impressive thing in a footballer-ish sort of way.

* sort of.

Is that a European euphemism for 'something for the weekend'?

Some of the worst pictures to try and sell a car here. However worth posting as a genuinely rare mini-barge and I cannot remember the last time I saw one in the wild. Lusted after one as a young man - Audi 90 quattro 20v (in budget)

Congratulations J_Wood3. I saw that E500 listed too. I hope it turns out well.

I have a flat battery in one of the E39s. What is the thread recommendation for a battery charger? Ta.

Been posted before I think, would say it's overpriced but so is everything else lately...

Well done for biting the bullet and hopefully you'll be a regular contributor. At least three of us now own S211 E500s with the M113 (you're now one of us btw) and one owns a S211 M273 5.5L, as you likely know.

How much was this one picked up for? I don't recall having seen it advertised.

Did a 3hr round trip to see my parents and sister today. Ave 26mpg in the X5 according to the OBC (cruise set at ~65mph)
I don't know how you stay so disciplined... on our drive from London to Leominster, with bikes on the roof for the first time I decided to set the limiter to ninety as a slight positive GPS monitored addition to the MB instructions of 80mph.

After a stop at which point the limiter cancels (though remains 'activated' as indicated by the led in the stalk), the speed exceeded 105mph with no bother to the stability of the bikes, which we were watching through the glass sunroof hehe

Accord Type R gone - made a small bit of profit including the work I did to get it through its latest MOT.
E39 of woe is going tomorrow.
Nice sounding bloke coming down from Edinburgh for it.
Lost £270 on the sale price between buying it without the need of a gearbox rebuild being declared and selling it with that declaration.
By some happy circumstance (Lord knows how, it never happens to me usually); the insurance company have given a full refund with no fee so all I'll lose out on top of the £270 is my, dad and mums time being wasted and £30 road tax for the month.

Lesson learnt anyway - ALWAYS test drive! Usually would, just got to make sure it's all the time from now on.
Glad you've managed to get the cars sorted and gone LTA...

As said; you know where I am if you ever decide to go down the E39 route again and want a 2nd opinion smile

So what now then, cash in hand? Any ideas; or just sit back and see what crops up? wink

Also interested, would make a sensible alternative to reviving the omega Mv6 currently awaiting restoration

Also went in a new (well, about 2 years old) Range Rover Evoque today. Nice enough but definitely not as comfortable as the LS460! It does go round corners a bit flatter though hehe

3 litre diesel. Anyone who says new diesel engines are refined is lying. At idle and pulling away you absolutely could feel vibrations from the engine.

A12 and M25 are miserable. Trying to 'make progress' is frustrating. Sticking to Lane 1 with the cruise is a lot easier.

Now I'll scan numerous websites until i find something which piques my interest, and then i'll send an insultingly low offer and begrudgingly raise it until they say yes!
