The Falcon and The Winter Soldier
Discussion
I watched it this morning before work.
much more mainstream than Wandavision no gimmicks here. There are some very good action sequences, but its not all about that. Its more about what the duo do when not saving the world. Sam helping his sister out (although a multi episode arc about something he could solve with one phone call if he wanted is gong to be frustrating. Thinking about it you'd be better off with Bruce Wayne as a teammate) Bucky trying to get closure for his past mis-deeds (although strictly speaking it wasn't his fault) is more interesting though.
If things carry on the way they started it's going to be very good indeed.

Very true. I enjoyed the first episode, but a little less on Sam's family issues and more on Bucky's issues with his haunting past and deeds would've been better for me, but probably not as easy to digest for American audiences, especially in the first episode which is just an opener. Looking forward to see where it goes. Lots of potential.
Certainly more conventional than WandaVision, which was to be expected.
The opening was a very cinematic action scene. Worthy of Top Gun.
After that it reminded me of the Marvel shows on NetFlix. That’s not an insult. I mean NetFlix shows were very focused on the lives of the characters rather than action and superheroics. The opening episode was mostly about watching the central characters just living in the world.

Loved the opening sequence.
It was good to see how their lives are when they aren't being superhero's, and just being regular people with real issues.
Bucky's backstory seems to be more intriguing and complex compared to Sam's based off this episode.
So far so good and can't wait to see the next one.

I'm sorry but I simply don't believe that the Avengers wouldn't be paid, particularly when Tony Stark was involved, a man who knows a thing or two about the monetary value of a weapon. Oh is that a big bad alien and you need our help? That'll be $10m please. Each.
Paid by whom? When they discussed the Sokovia accords in Civil War, the issue was they were private citizens acting without any authority. Sam Wilson didn’t sign, and so he definitely wasn’t going to be paid after that. SpudLink said:

Sam even explains this, that he was doing it because he was able to help defend earth and not for money as no-one was paying him for helping, any sort of renumeration was via goodwill and donations.
It's a sad parallel to the world we actually live in that even though Sam was one of the reasons the bank guy was even sitting at his desk it doesn't count for anything, business is still business.
However any good deeds are forgotten about quickly and the world is still about the haves and have nots and special favours won't be granted.
Sam truly believed that because of who he was he wouldn't have any issues getting accepted.
I think his sister did try and play the race card, however I couldn't gauge how much of a factor that also actually was in their loan denial as well.

Like I said before he’d be much better off having Batman as a team mate. If the bank wouldn’t loan the money he’d buy the bank.

I don’t buy it. All he has to do is call up black panther and he’d have a fully fixed up hover shrimp ship.

Billionaire philanthropist Tony Stark as a (former) team mate. I get why the script needs them to be regular folks with problems when off duty, but you’d assume that Tony would have taken care of the financials for the team... There are former soldiers reduced to living on the streets rather than rely on the financial help of others. Sam probably has that attitude of wanting to help others, but reluctant to accept help. I expect they will explore this over the course of the series. Like I said before he’d be much better off having Batman as a team mate. If the bank wouldn’t loan the money he’d buy the bank.
It felt very generic compared to the absolute breath of fresh air that Wandavision was.
I get that a lot of people will prefer this approach and due to the way the world has panned out we've not had any bang bang MCU superhero action for a hell of a long time until now, but I think if you're going to be knocking out multiple series alongside multiple movies every year then you have to lean far more towards the sort of thing Wandavision did than Falcon and The Winter Soldier. It was pretty much throwaway telly and if it carries on the same trajectory I think this would have been better as a binge rather than weekly show, there is absolutely nothing to discuss unlike Wandavision.
Maybe it'll take a complete 180 in the next few episodes, but the first one felt far closer to the Netflix shows (or the DC shows), I think Marvel (under the Feige / MCU guise) is much, much better than that.
