OP I had my back box modified, oh er matron, on a BMW: Top of the exhaust was laser cut, some tubing with holes in ( if no holes might as well do a back box delete as you get a weight saving) to join the entry and exit of the box, the wadding was replaced, and then it was sealed up and stuck back under the car. It was a fairly low cost solution, kept it looking oem, but it gives it a nice burble, nothing particularly obnoxious, and a bit quieter than a back box delete. There is no drone at motorway speeds either, and it wouldn’t ps off your neighbours, or some of the Karen who got lost looking for mums net that seem to have posted on here.

Not sure what the internals of a skoda box looks like; have you tried a Skoda specific forum?

Was that done by an exhaust specialist? That's the type of thing I want. I'm sure there's a way to open up the existing silencers, make some modifications and re-seal them.

I've asked on a Skoda forum, but sadly changing is exhaust isn't something many people do on these cars, and off the shelf exhaust options available are just far too loud for my taste.

This video shows how the stock exhaust sounds. For me, there's nothing there at all.

I'd be happy if I can get something that sounds a little like this 330i but with maybe less pops and bangs. It's not overly intrusive.

Before the Superb I had an Octavia VRS. The VRS has one of those sound generators, and while some people don't like them, I thought they at least provided some noise inside the cabin that drowned out the sound of the engine. Sadly the Superb lacks this.

At the minute I'm in two minds whether to do anything with the exhaust, I'm just exploring my options.

The problem you’ve got is that it’s not your typical modders car, therefore there will be little to no experience of anyone opening up the silencers and changing them. You could ask a garage/exhaust place to do this, it should be possible and obviously someone with decent exhaust knowledge should have some idea of likely results once inside, but before then probably not, even once inside the actual results will be a bit finger In the air.

It was someone who did some work on Z4s, he fixed and relocated my roof motor too ( for some reason, they cars have a built in pond feature that the motor sits in) both jobs done just before the 1st lockdown.. there a couple of people on that forum that can do it. The forum post is here. https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=88783

This.. you might have the same challenge going down the custom route too I.e. it might be a bit trial and error to get to the desired result

More to the point, how can you 'delete' something?

I thought that was down to the manufacturer?

To you 2 learned gentlemen ‘delete’ would be a synonym of ‘remove’. In this case to delete a back box is to remove it and replace it with a straight pipe section. I can draw it in crayons for you if that is too complicated.

It's the ever more dumbing down of society perpetuated by americans and their social media. I just watched a youtube vid of gordon ramsay where he turned his oven to something farenheit. Is he out of his tiny little mind?

Sounds like you've already been educated by the morons.

It's a luxury car which they have put considerably effort into making quiet, why on earth would you want to ruin it by inflicting more 4 cylinder drone on yourself and everyone else in the vicinity? Given you've already wrecked the engine through chavving it up perhaps it's time to take the hint and just enjoy the car the way it was designed.
TIL remapping a is now considered ‘chavvy’. You’d think these forums were anti car going some of the snotty/ sanctimonious drivel on here.

All the boxes the manufacturers install do something, and - since they don;t realy want to pay for any more than they have to - simply put:

1. the ones upstream do useful things in terms of emissions control (cat),
2. pressure termination of the exhaust design (i.e making the engine 'see' open air at the desired pipe lengths etc - essential to making the engine behave volumetrically the way the manufacturer wants for the power curve ( - involves both cat *and* resonator) and finally
3. - keeping it quiet (the rear silencer)

So - the simplest and most efficient to make a car quiet to install the largest-volume silencer you can, as far back in the car as you can. And that's what manufacturers do. Depending on how best to shut things up at that point, it might be part resonator, part pass-though silencer.

If the OP wants to ply with exhaust note /level - definitely leave the resonators and everything else upstream; and only play with removing the back-box; and then play with adding-back in silencer volume until desired target is approximated.

That way
1. OP gets what he wants
2. MIN effect on engine management, emissions - and drones.

I've spoke to a company that make custom exhausts, they said they can help but need to see the car first before they can provide some options. They seem to understand what it is that I want, so once I've got the car back from the garage, I'll take it to them to get it looked at.

Good result, let us know how you get on. Did they indicate cost?

get a 2nd hand back box and cut the top off so you can modify inside and get a bigger piece of steel and screw on with self tapers over the hole and repeat until your happy with the sound

There is a custom exhaust place in Darlington, they made an exhaust for me and asked how "i wanted it to sound" perhaps they can help.

http://www.exhaustafix.co.uk/

looks like they are closed though.
On the topic of exhaust sounds are not BMW synthesised and can be altered , when my sons mate had his bmw remapped he was asked what car he wanted it to sound like and he could pick from the full range of cars , i believe he picked a M5 with pops and bangs and it set up with the map. and it played vis a speaker in the exhaust possibly on the inside too via the stereo.
