Thought it'd be a nice to start a thread for general chit chat re the bits and pieces we do to our cars on a daily basis

On Sunday I took the 630 for a short drive to charge the battery as it was due to be collected this week for some body repairs after someone reversed into the front of it before Christmas.

On driving, there was a terrible grinding/rubbing sound coming from the NS front. After 1 min of driving, the sound was accompanied by some rather nasty smelling smoke! Not great. I suspected a stuck/seized caliper secondary to the recent snow and ice. Disc felt warm but admittedly not significantly hotter than the other 3.

Thought I'd recheck things today as it's now much milder. Perhaps the warmer weather may have unseized things, however the sound was still there and worse.

Decided it might be prudent to have a good check over things: brakes, wheel and suspension.

A cursory glance revealed a notable abnormality eek

Snapped spring with the fragment lodged in. Spring seems to have come off the strut (probably damaging it too)

Normal side:

Got it jacked up to see if I could dislodge the fragment (mallet + pry bar). Unfortunately to no avail

Recovery booked for next week. The advantage of having more than one car is you've always got a spare to use. smile

What have you guys been up to?

Nowt today, but yesterday I successfully removed a nice wavey scratch running the full length of the fuel filler cap that some imbecile kindly left for me. Itching to clean the whole car but waiting for a settled weather spell. Shouldn't be too far off now - fingers crossed.

How did you remove it? Interested!

had an SLI emulator fitted to my F10 along with a bit of coding for my stereo after upgrading the speakers.

Well I managed to put my 630 in a hedge a few weeks ago. I joined a roundabout and accelerated onto my exit. I experienced what can only be described as a tank slapper and turned 180 , mounted a pavement and dumped it in a hedge. Got out and had a look around and everything mechanically is fine with the car but I now have a scratch on the wing and the paint is cracked on the plastic wing...... I blame the -6C temperature and my heavy right foot, together with 2 weeks worth of food shopping in the boot it acted like a huge pendulum!

I’d be interested to to see the before and after of your paint job as we have stratus grey and I’m tempted to get mine fixed

Bloody hell, I hope you didnt crack the eggs or smash a bottle of wine....seriously thou, sounds like you and the car got away lightly.

Hope the repair isn't to costly.

Hardly that worthy but I contemplated(again) getting a version of Apple Carplay in my 2019 M140, (I have business nav) dont wish to do it all online via some coder and i'm concerned it may have any impact my warranty on the car ...Not that savvy on these things and only had the car just over a month.

Painted the wing mirror cover on my other half’s 125i after some tt in a white van clipped the mirror the other week.

Not looking too bad for a rattle can special.

Nothing today, but did swat up on using INPA and NCSExpert and other s/w last night, to test downloading/programming my GM5 on my E46 325i. Some of the windows are not working correctly, so new GM5 needs to be sourced shortly.

Glad you're ok! Easy to do. DSC didn't kick in at all?

Will get some photos up once the 630 is repaired. Hopefully the colour match will be decent.

As an aside, looks like Bimmer.Work is back doing free VIN decoder checks but you need the whole 17 digit VIN, not just the last 7 (as with previous decoders).

Drove it, was a bit naughty coming off a roundabout, decided to wash it next dry-ish day.

Nothing that interesting, but I did renew my warranty on the M6 yesterday, now monthly so should stay at the same price forever. Reduced excess to £100 whilst at it.

Plan to actually drive it tomorrow, which will be a novelty!

Last thing I did was lubricate the boot hinges on my 3 series touring.

They were really quite stiff, and one of them was flexing quite a lot. Good to sort it as replacing a boot hinge is a sad job.

JakeT, what did you use on the hinges?

Yesterday, I gave the car a clean after the recent spell of snow we had. Rinsed the car then sprayed loads of citrus wash over it before snowfoaming twice and rinsing it. Completely contactless and came up great, really happy with the combo of ceramic wax and occasional Sonax BSD top up so far.

Tonight, just bought a Mishimoto silicone intake boot for that sweet, sweet resonator delete noise on the N52. Managed to get £7-8 off with eBay's PLAYWITH15 discount code!

My E34 is currently at the garage having a section of its exhaust replaced. Unfortunately the clutch slave went so it had to be recovered there frown hoping I might have it back soon - it’s been there since Monday! They did say they were waiting on a bracket for the exhaust or something, and as it’s only my second car I don’t mind leaving it up there. Still, feels like somethings missing when I look outside and it’s not there!

Put a set of Z4M alloys on my E90 330i that i had got as a space set for my Z4C. They were only sitting in the garage anyway.

I think they look surprisingly well.

Got the M140i serviced at the local main Dealers this week also. Its its first scheduled service @ 16,000 miles (2 year marker hit first) but we had had the oil and filter replaced @ 8K miles or so by a local BMW indy up the road from us. Not a big fan of the long service intervals on BMWs these days though more of an issue on the diesels than petrol.

Just LOTS of WD-40 and moving the glass section back and forth all the while. I probably spent an hour all told. Once it was moving freely again a good dose of lithium spray was added to all of the moving points to prevent the ingress of dirt and moisture.

Seeing as the property market hasn't closed down this time and I want to move soon I went to see a property I might want to buy.

I'm not sure about the property, but at least I got to drive my weekend toy. laugh

Love that blue 440i

Today I continuity tested the convertible hood harness to find I have no continuity on two pairs of wires - not unexpectedly after the previous diagnostics and lots of research. Next step is hope for a couple of dry hours so I can get the roof down, dismantle even more of the interior and see if I can find the breaks.

My other one is still stored since December and I really want to go and get out in it to remind myself what a working convertible with an interior is like but I suspect that doesn't count as essential travel.
